Bagman Headlines 2015 NE Manion Cup Field

11 potential stayers will take their place in the field on Saturday, led by the Chris Waller-trained Bagman.

The eight-year-old gelding won The Valley Handicap (2040m) and Legacy 2014 Badge Appeal Handicap (2000m) last August before scoring minor placings in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) and Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) in September. Bagman ended the spring with a fifth place run in the Group 1 Metropolitan (2400m) after he was unable to stay the trip.

Following a three-month spell, Bagman resumed in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) on January 31. He was not fast away out the gates and back to the rear with eight lengths to make up at the 500 metres. The gelding made up substantial ground late through the pack, finishing just two and a half lengths off winner Weary in a top run.

Bagman then ran end of the field in both the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) and Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) in February. Bagman will carry the topweight of 59kg in the 2015 NE Manion Cup and jump from barrier five with James McDonald.

Waller will saddle a further three runners in the race – Diametric, Permit, and Grand Marshal – giving him greater odds of winning the $150,000 total prize money on offer.

Six-year-old Diametric enjoyed a minor placing in the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) on February 21 and will jump from barrier six with Damien Oliver in Saturday’s race, eight-year-old Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) runner-up Permit will jump from barrier nine with Tommy Berry, and five-year-old Grand Marshal will have to overcome a wide start from the outside gate with Jim Cassidy.
