A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
Three-year-old filly First Seal may hold a nomination for four of the eight Group One Championships races running at Randwick on April 4 and 11 but her main target at this stage is the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m).
The $400,000 set-weights race for three-year-old fillies will run at Rosehill on March 28, just one week prior to the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m), and is favoured over the latter race according to trainer John Thompson.
First Seal is 44th in the Doncaster Mile order of entry and a $13 hopeful in the early betting at Ladbrokes.com.au but would be a firm favourite in the 2015 Vinery Stud Stakes, where she’s all-but guaranteed a start.
“The Doncaster is still an option but the immediate plan is to go the Vinery next start,” Thompson told Racenet.
“We are down the order in the Doncaster, and it’s on seven days after the Vinery, but if we happen to get a run then that’s certainly an option,” Thompson said.
“If we miss a run in the Doncaster, she will head to the Queen Of The Turf instead.”
First Seal is nominated for three races on April 11, which is day 2 of The Championships series, the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m), Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m), and Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m).
Thompson has made it known that the $1 million Queen Of The Turf Stakes will be her aim.
The three-year-old filly is already a winner at the highest level of racing after surging away to win the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) by three lengths on October 4. She was come close a further two times, running second in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) just seven days later and more recently in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) last Saturday.
The Coolmore Classic was First Seal’s third start this campaign, after the filly ran second in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stake (1200m) first-up and won the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m). She was the $1.60 odds-on favourite but was just nosed out by Plucky Belle on the line after working through a wide run.
First Seal has come through the run in good order and is ready to tackle the Vinery Stud Stakes in a fortnight.
“Her best attribute is how she pulls up,” Thompson said.
“She’s come through the run and hasn’t left an oat.”
