Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Nominations for four of the five Group One races running at Rosehill on Saturday closed this morning with The Galaxy (1100m) the only race not seeing its nominations extended after attracting a healthy field size of 22 sprinters.
Headlining the nominations is defending champion Tiger Tees but after his poor performance in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) on March 7, he is not the most impressive or exciting nomination.
The Joseph Pride-trained Tiger Tees won The Galaxy last year by a head. The seven-year-old gelding was away well and settled just behind the leaders on the rail. He was still there on the turn for home and hit the lead with 200 metres to go. He found himself under assault in the final 100 metres but was strong enough to the line to hold off his challenger Anatina.
Tiger Tees went on to earn a minor placing in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) in April last year before spelling for nine weeks. The gelding had a short but impressive spring campaign, winning both the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) and Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) in August as well as running second in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m), after which he was spelled for four months.
The gelding resumed in the Canterbury Stakes, jumping well and rolling across from the outside barrier to be second one length off the outside lead. He was under extreme pressure approaching the 300 metre mark and quickly shuffled back through the field to cross the line last, eight lengths behind winner Cosmic Endeavour.
Pride has also nominated Listed Fireball Quality (1100m) third Kuro and seven-year-old Rain Affair.
There are much more impressive nominees for the 2015 Galaxy, including Peter & Paul Snowden’s Miracles Of Life.
The four-year-old mare dead heated with Bell Sprinter in the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint (1100m) back in October and resumed on March 7 to win the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) by an impressive two and a quarter lengths.
Chris Waller’s Heart Testa is another last-start winner after the gelding scored the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) on February 14.
Other classy horses nominated for The Galaxy include David Pfieffer’s Atmospherical, Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) minor placer Avoid Lightning, Team Hawkes’ Deep Field, who ran third behind Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m), Noel Mayfield-Smith’s Famous Seamus, Group One Oakleigh Plate (1100m) third placegetter Fast ‘N’ Rocking, Peter Moody’s Flamberge, Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1000m) winner Rubick, and Gai Waterhouse’s Sweet Idea.
