The Championships Beckon for Pago Pago Stakes Winner Tarquin

Talented colt Tarquin has continued his perfect career starts at Rosehill Gardens, this afternoon, delivering Godolphin Australia another two-year-old win in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m).

Jumping from the gates well, Tarquin was settled well within the field of nine; allowing Raphael’s Cat, Odyssey Moon and Inner Circle to set a noticeably quick tempo away from the barriers and approaching the bend.

Arriving at the final straight with plenty to do, the son of Hard Spun was pushed wide and exploded forward; locking in a line of four with Rageese, Odyssey Moon and Raphael’s Cat; poking clear in the last 100m and hitting the line half a length ahead.

Trainer John O’Shea was understandably pleased with Tarquin performance for success in the 2015 Pago Pago Stakes, revealing a race like the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on Day 1 of The Championships will figure as his major target this campaign.

“It showed his quality,”

“We’ve always really, really liked him and thought he’d run well today.

“The tempo of the race meant that Tarquin was brought into it and I think probably James (McDonald) his little colt (Inner Circle) ran out of his skin but he just isn’t ready for it yet.

“I think Tarquin’s got a very, very bright future and going forward into the Sires’ Produce and the Champagne he’ll be quite effective.”

Irish jockey William Buick delivered an exceptional ride for success aboard Tarquin this afternoon, and was quick to comment on the quality of his talented two-year-old mount.

“It’s a privilege to be able to come here and ride in these races and ride nice horses,” Buick said.

“John and the team have been great to us and very pleased I can repay what they’ve done for us.

“He’s a lovely horse, he’s still immature but he’s going the right way and he had plenty left on the line.”
