Suavito Takes Out 2015 Blamey Stakes

Talented mare Suavito has continued her perfect start to the 2015 Autumn Carnival; leading almost from start to finish to comfortably take out the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington Racecourse.

Jumping from the gates poorly, Suavito gave the entire field a head start, but quickly kicked into gear and pressed forward around the outside; finding the fore of the field alongside Jacquinot Bay and Sertorius rounding the bend.

Hugging the rails and offered a clear line upon reaching the final straight, Damien Oliver continued to spool-up the Thorn Park mare who continued to find; hitting the line a length ahead of Sertorius; outsider Kourkam running on for third.

Oliver completed a typically polished ride on Suavito to take out the 2015 Blamey Stakes, crediting the career-best form of the four-year-old and trainer Nigel Blackiston in the triumph.

“It always looked a sticky gate out there and we were all looking at each other, no-one wanted to lead to I made a gutsy move and took it up and it’s good when it pays off,” Oliver said.

“She’s strung together four wins now and got a nice picket fence there.

“She’s such a tough, honest, durable mare and is in great form.

“All credit to Nigel – he’s done a wonderful job with her.”

Blackiston was full of praise for Oliver’s decision to lead early on Suavito this afternoon, and revealed a trip to Sydney for The Championships will figure as the major target for the mare from this point on.

“That’s why you put D Oliver on board – I’m not a fan of leaders but he summed the race up perfectly, got cheap sectionals and kicked away,” Blackiston said.

“We knew she’d put in a good fight and she keeps finding.

“We possibly might think of staying here for the Sunline (Stakes, Group 2, 1600m, March 27) and then to Sydney for the Queen Elizabeth.

“We’re going to look at the 2000m weight-for-age Queen Elizabeth or the Queen Of The Turf over a mile.

“I really think she’ll be better next spring.”
