Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The results of the Listed MSS Security Stakes (1100m) at Flemington this afternoon showed that a jockey can ultimately decide the winner of a race.
International superstar jockey Joao Moreira, who is based in Hong Kong, got his first win of the day aboard the Lee & Shannon Hope-trained Pittsburgh Flyer.
Moreira is a world star of the saddle that comes in and does his thing to win races. The master of early positioning got Pittsburgh Flyer into a good position early, which set the three-year-old filly to hit the front with 200 metres to go and battle it out with Earthquake, who was ultimately beaten by half a length. It was a photo finish for third with Mick Price’s Ready To Fight scoring the minor placing ahead of Setinum.
“She was fantastic,” the jockey said after the race.
“When I jumped on top of her in the parade ring she gave me such a good feel.
“She was well prepared by the connections and I am just a lucky boy to be sitting on top of her today.
“They went quiet hard in front and I did as the trainer asked me to just be patient and just go for the last dash in the last furlong.
“She just finished so strong and it was too hard for the others.”
Shannon Hope, who trains in partnership with his father Lee, acknowledges the luck he had in securing Moreira to ride in the 2015 MSS Security Stakes.
“I was very fortunate,” he said.
“When the light weight came in I was trying to find a jockey to ride the weight and Mitchell Friend organised Joao Moreira to ride for us and I very much appreciate it.”
Pittsburgh Flyer is sure to be competitive during the spring but before then the Hopes’ must make a decision whether to continue a strong assault on the autumn and head to Sydney or ease back and head to Adelaide.
“It was a pretty tough race for a three-year-old Listed race and it was more like a Group 2 or a Group 3,” he said.
“We have a few options and we will just work out whether we go to Sydney or back off and go to Adelaide. We will see how she pulls up.”
Punters who backed Pittsburgh Flyer to win the MSS Security Sprint enjoyed a lucrative payout of $14 from online bookmaker Ladbrokes.com.au.
Royal Snitzel was the firm favourite in the betting but couldn’t figure in the race at all, finishing two and three-quarter lengths away in fifth place.
