2015 Flemington Super Saturday Scratchings & Track Report

Flemington Racecourse will play host to Super Saturday this afternoon with two of the biggest Autumn Racing Carnival events running on the same day – the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m). The two races are like chalk and cheese, giving punters plenty of variety.

The entire nine-race card is a black-type affair, which means racing enthusiasts will be glued to their screens all afternoon long.

It’ll be a warm, clear day for the 105 predicted runners at Flemington today with a maximum temperature of 29 degrees at 2:00pm and 21% humidity. There is zero percent chance of rain and winds of up to 24 km/h.

Flemington Track Report – 14/03/2015

  • Rail Position: +3 Entire Circuit
  • Track Condition: Good 4
  • Weather: Fine
  • Penetrometer: 88

The racing at Flemington kicks off at 12:40pm with the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) and will continue until 5:50pm with the Listed My Kitchen Rules Stakes (1400m) closing the program.

There are two feature races in today’s meeting, running back-to-back and offering $1 million in total prize money each.

The Newmarket Handicap will run at 3:50pm, which will see nine sprinters run down the Flemington straight. This is the smallest field size in the race’s history but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in talent.

Three of the world’s highest-rated sprinters – Lankan Rupee, Chautauqua, and Terravista – will renew their rivalry that saw them finish in the first three during the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) on November 8.

Defending champion Lankan Rupee has taken over the top spot in the betting at Ladbrokes.com.au from Chautauqua, offering odds of $3, firming from $3.30.

Following the Newmarket Handicap is the Australian Cup at 4:30pm. A near-capacity field of 16 middle-distance runners will run over the 2000 metre trip, including Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) winner Protectionist.

The Kris Lees-trained horse is the $5.50 second favourite in the betting, behind three-time Group One winner and track specialist Happy Trails at $4.20.

There has so far been a total of six scratchings across the day’s races, see below for the full details.
