Phar Lap Stakes 2015 Betting Tips

The 2015 Phar Lap Stakes is one of eight races supporting the Group 1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill Racecourse on Saturday, betting tips for the three-year-olds’ showdown detailed below.

Running as Race 8 at 4:50pm (AEDT) one event before the Ajax Stakes rounds out the day’s action, this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Cellarbrations Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) originally drew a final field of 10 hopefuls.

Tim Martin has scratched Heavens Above (8) from the line-up however leaving nine to face off in the Australian Derby and Oaks lead-up, including two current co-favourites.

Both at $3.90 after firming in from their opening Phar Lap Stakes odds are Winx and Supara, the latter the biggest market mover in from $5.50.

The Chris Waller-trained Winx has the Australian Oaks in her sights and is a Group 2 winner from the spring in the Furious Stakes, as well as a Group 1 runner-up behind this weekend’s odds-on 2015 Coolmore Classic favourite First Seal in the Flight Stakes over the mile last October.

This time in she’s been unplaced in both her runs including the Surround Stakes over 1400m at Warwick Farm behind First Seal last time out she’ll be improving on when up in distance here.

Supara meanwhile was second in the Surround Stakes and looking to build on that with Gai Waterhouse’s Domesday filly well-supported in her first look at 1500m.

Other notable hopes in the first half of the Phar Lap Stakes betting markets include the rails-drawn Wine Tales ($4.40) who also represents Waller, Waterhouse’s Spring Champion Stakes winner Hampton Court ($9) and the Gary Portelli-trained Testashadow ($9).

So will one of Waller’s two take it out or can Supara go one better on her way to the Oaks?

1st

#8 Supara ($3.90)

Think the fillies will have the upper hand over the boys in this one and the pick of the bunch is improver Supara who the punters are starting to come for. Her performance last time out in the Surround Stakes was solid, and with the runaway winner of that race First Seal in the day’s feature on Saturday that leaves this honest daughter of Domesday as the one to beat with her nice barrier two draw.

2nd

#7 Wine Tales ($4.40)

Of the Waller stablemates think Wine Tales on the rails with Jim Cassidy riding can improve on her Surround Stakes sixth with a big run second-up. Her second-up record is good (3-1-2-0) and she’s twice run well at Rosehill so track suits.

3rd

#1 Hampton Court ($9)

Of the boys think Waterhouse’s Group 1 winning Redoute’s Choice colt is the best of them. Didn’t show much first-up when ninth in the Hobartville, but that was a crack field with the winner going on to take out the Randwick Guineas. He gets a bit more distance and has winning form (at elite level) up to 2000m. Rosehill is his hoodoo track however with five previous starts for just the one third place so needs to overcome that.
