A bumper nine-race program lights up Sydney’s Rosehill Racecourse on Saturday including the Maurice McCarten Stakes 2015, a betting update and tips for the handicap clash early on the program found below.
Due to jump at 1:00pm (AEDT) as Rosehill Race 2, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Smooth FM Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m) features a small but classy field of eight hopefuls.
Heading the field, weights and Maurice McCarten Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au at a firming odds-on price of $1.45 (in from $1.50) is the uber-talented Deep Field.
A winner of five of his six career starts to date the Team Hawkes-trained Northern Meteor stallion comes via a first-up third behind Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) down the Flemington straight on February 21.
The four-year-old has won both his other second-up starts coming into the Maurice McCarten, which will be an advantageous drop down in class for Deep Field.
He jumps from barrier four with Tommy Berry aboard this weekend and should bounce back despite his 58kg top weight.
Following Deep Field in the latest Maurice McCarten Stakes odds are the likes of the rails-drawn Target In Sight ($4.60) for Warwick Farm horseman Joe Pride and Gary Portelli’s Oakleigh Plate sixth placed four-year-old I’m All The Talk ($10) before the markets blow out.
So will the odds-on favourite get the job done for the punters in Race 2 on Coolmore Classic Day or is there an upset Maurice McCarten Stakes result on the cards from a longer priced hope like the in-form roughie Tahitian Black ($26)?
#1 Deep Field ($1.45)
The record speaks for itself. Six wins, five starts and a third in a Group 1 first-up behind the world’s equal highest-rated sprinter. The two stars that beat him home in the Lightning Stakes aren’t here this time, it’s a drop from a hot Group 1 field to Group 3 company and a step up from 1000m to 1100m so everything working in Deep Field’s favour. Could have gone to the Newmarket and probably would have been competitive, but gets the chance to get a confidence-boosting win here in his first official run at Rosehill. Just needs to handle the kilos.
#4 Target In Sight ($4.60)
Looks like the bookies have it right with this Nadeem gelding to get a gun run from barrier one with flying hoop James McDonald in the saddle. Hasn’t raced since a fourth in a Black-Type on Melbourne Cup Day but flies first-up. From five resuming runs he has won three and placed second twice so hard to bet against that in the place markets.
#6 Tahitian Black ($26)
While I’m All The Talk certainly has claims after being far from disgraced in the Oakleigh Plate, looking for a bit of value and eyes are drawn to David Pfieffer’s 48-start veteran. The seven-year-old has run top three in all of his summer runs since December, including a 1000m win at Randwick in January. His runs have all been in easier company but carried 58.5kg for a close second at this track and distance last time out so deserves a shot in the stakes race with 54kg to suit better.
