One of two races off a ballot free ride into the Golden Slipper Saturday week, the Magic Night Stakes 2015 is a big deal for the horses and their connections as well as the punters at Rosehill Gardens this weekend.
Running as the fourth on Coolmore Classic Day at 2:10pm (AEDT), the $175,000 Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) features a final field of 14 two-year-old fillies.
Leading the Magic Night Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $3.20 is the Chris Waller-trained Always Allison, a $21 shot for the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) on March 21 despite not currently being nominated for the world’s richest race for juveniles.
Last seen winning her second career start in the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm late last month, Always Alison could be a late Golden Slipper entry at a cost of $150,000 to connections if she wins this weekend.
The other best fancied fillies in the Magic Night Stakes betting markets are Gai Waterhouse’s Sweet Embrace Stakes runner-up Speak Fondly ($5) out wide in barrier 12, Godolphin improver Italy ($8), the Gerald Ryan-trained Snitzel filly Perignon ($8.50) and the lightly-raced Serenade ($8.50).
With a host of livewire chances as well as some generously priced roughie shots below Races.com.au sort the pretenders from the genuine contenders in the Magic Night Stakes before you place your bets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
#7 Italy ($8)
There should be a red hot pace on in this race with the quickest of the pack drawn wide, and that is going to suit the John O’Shea-trained Italy in barrier eight with hoop-of-the-moment James McDonald in the saddle. He rode the daughter of Domesday to victory two back at Canterbury over 1100m before James Doyle was aboard for her fifth, when beaten only 2.4 lengths, in the Sweet Embrace. She’s had a black-type run now and will be improving.
#1 Always Allison ($3.20)
Deserving favourite but barrier could prove problematic. Was impressive winner of the Sweet Embrace, her second from as many starts both at Warwick Farm. The More Than Ready filly is at Rosehill this time and the track should suit, but she did it from the inside alley last time out and will be needing different tactics with Glyn Schofield retaining the ride. Right gap at the right time, this is your filly.
#11 Thorsborne ($26)
Always keen to look at the value in the market, this is an early market mover on the rails. Not sure if that’s where they’ll want to be coming from in this race but Ryan’s Hinchinbrook filly has had two runs for two wins and keeps improving. One was at Canberra on debut over 1000m and the other was Bathurst’s Gold Nugget (1100m) on March 1. Two weeks between runs, she can travel, big city debut in Sydney but won last time by four lengths from gate two so should be right up there.
