2015 Blamey Stakes Betting Tips

Super Saturday is on this weekend at Flemington Racecourse with a full black-type race card, including the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m).

A total of nine horses will tackle the mile, three of which are paying single figure odds in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au.

The Nigel Blackiston-trained Suavito is the $2.30 favourite and has seen plenty of support from punters with her price shortening from $2.60 since opening.

Suavito is already a winner at the highest level of racing after surprisingly taking out the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) on February 28, in which she beat home odds-on favourite Dissident. The four-year-old mare has placed in 13 of her 16 total career starts and has won her past three consecutive starts.

Is it enough to justify her favouritism for the 2015 Blamey Stakes or will another runner score the win? Check out our betting tips for the race below to help you make an informed punt.

1st

#5 Suavito ($2.30)

Nigel Blackiston’s four-year-old mare is well tipped to win when she takes on the boys in the Blamey Stakes. Suavito will have to overcome a wide start from barrier eight but will have champion hoop Damien Oliver in the saddle. The mare is also in perfect form after winning her past three starts, beginning with the Group 3 Eliza Park International Stakes (1600m) back in October followed by the Group 2 Momentum Energy Stakes (2000m) on November 8. Following a three and a half month spell, the mare resumed in the Futurity Stakes, which she confidently won by one and a quarter lengths. Suavito has placed in three of her four starts at Flemington and all three of her runs over a mile.

2nd

#1 Smokin’ Joey ($4.60)

The Wez Hunter-trained gelding is set to have his campaign grand finale in the Blamey Stakes after running straight through since October with a total of nine starts. Smokin’ Joey was luckless for the majority of his preparation, finally breaking his winner’s hoodoo on February 14 to win the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) a short half-head from Jacquinot Bay after delivering a late burst of speed, followed up with a second placing in the Futurity Stakes. Smokin’ Joey will have to carry the topweight of 59kg but will enjoy a good start from barrier three with Brad Parnham.

3rd

#3 Jacquinot Bay ($10)

Rounding out our Blamey Stakes trifecta tip is the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Jacquinot Bay, who is one of two runners for the training duo. The seven-year-old gelding has won six of his 11 starts over a mile and run second in a further three. He enjoyed a trio of wins over the trip at the end of 2014-beginning of 2015, which included the Listed Lord Stakes (1600m) and Summer Championships followed by a runner-up finish in the Carlyon Cup. The gelding stepped up to 1800m for the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes on February 28 but didn’t run the trip out as well as over a mile. Jacquinot Bay will jump from the outside gate with Michael Walker to ride.
