Last start Sweet Embrace Stakes winner Always Allison looks to secure an 11th hour bid in the Golden Slipper Saturday week when she jumps favourite in the 2015 Magic Night Stakes odds this weekend at Rosehill Gardens.
A return to the track on March 21 for the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) could be possible for Chris Waller’s undefeated daughter of More Than Ready if Always Allison salutes for the punters in the $175,000 Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m).
Calaway Gal (2002) was the last filly to complete the Magic Night Stakes – Golden Slipper double, but even if Always Allison wins the ballot free ride into the Group 1 with a victory on Saturday connections will need to pay the $150,000 late entry to get the currently not-nominated youngster into the field.
Last time out Always Allison scored a half-length victory from barrier one at Warwick Farm in the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m).
She now backs up a fortnight later in her Rosehill debut but will need to be improving after drawing wide with barrier 11 of 14 in the Magic Night Stakes.
The wide draw hasn’t deterred the bookmakers however with Ladbrokes.com.au installing Always Allison at the top of Magic Night Stakes betting at $3.20.
There are four other single figure fancies in the latest Magic Night Stakes odds including $4.50 second elect Speak Fondly.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained Northern Meteor filly was second past the post behind Always Allison first-up in the Sweet Embrace Stakes, her second run following a third on debut in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) last October.
She should be improving second-up on Saturday, but like the favourite has a horror barrier 12 draw to overcome with Tommy Berry jumping aboard for the ride.
The next best in betting are Serenade and Italy both at $8 to win, the fillies drawn in barriers seven and eight respectively.
Speak Fondly’s Sweet Embrace jockey Kerrin McEvoy rides the Michael Moroney-trained Star Witness filly Serenade in the Magic Night Stakes replacing Glyn Schofield in the saddle.
Schofield rode her last time out at the track on February 7 for her third behind Lady Jivago in the Inglis Classic (1200m), but McEvoy got familiar with her in a 900m Rosehill trial on March 3.
Italy then is a livewire chance in the race according to her confident hoop James McDonald.
The John O’Shea-trained daughter of Domesday is looking to improve on her fifth in the Sweet Embrace where she was beaten under two and a half lengths after getting knocked multiple times throughout her run.
Rounding out the hopes under $10 is then the Gerald Ryan-trained Snitzel filly Perignon at $8.50.
She has won one of her four starts to date and comes off a seventh to English in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) from last Saturday.
Also of note at more generous odds for an upset Magic Night Stakes result are the likes of Waterhouse’s nicely-drawn Carriages ($12) in barrier two for her resuming run and the Clarry Conners-trained Sweet Embrace Stakes fourth placed Mowgli ($14) with barrier 13 to overcome.
