Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A small field of just eight two-year-old fillies is set to tackle the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Saturday, five of which are offering single figure odds in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au.
This gives punters plenty of opportunities to back a well-priced runner, including $3.80 favourite Air Apparent.
The David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained filly has yet to win her maiden, coming very close her first two times out with runner-up finishes in minor races throughout January. She stepped up to black-type racing for the first time in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude (1100m) on February 14, finishing just shy of the placings in fourth place, before running sixth in the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) two weeks later.
Air Apparent will jump from barrier seven with Michael Walker and faces some tough competition in her quest to win her maiden in the 2015 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes, including from four other single figure hopefuls:
- #1 Pasadena Girl ($4) – Peter Moody’s filly is one of three last-start winners in the field, scoring the Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m) on debut by one length. Due to her black-type win, Pasadena Girl will shoulder the lone topweight of 56.5kg in the Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes but will enjoy the inside jump from barrier one with Vlad Duric to ride.
- #5 Pursuits ($4) – the lone Godolphin-bred filly in the race will need to impress on Saturday if she has any hopes of joining her stablemates in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) next Saturday. Pursuits earned a minor placing in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Fillies Preview (1000m) on debut before finishing end of the field in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude (1100m). The John O’Shea-trained filly will jump from barrier two with James Doyle.
- #4 Andrioli ($4.40) – Robert Smerdon’s filly won her maiden at Sandown Lakes over 1200 metres on March 4, beating home her rivals by two lengths. The filly will jump from barrier six with Nicholas Hall.
- #3 Dagny ($8) – rounding out the single figure odds is Sam Pritchard-Gordon’s filly who is also the market mover after her price shortened from $9. Dagny has yet to win her maiden but did earn a minor placing in the Group 3 Ottowa Stakes (1000m) back in November. The filly will jump from the outside gate with Ben Melham to rdie.
