Who Shot Thebarman Included in 2015 Sky High Stakes Field

Chris Waller’s Melbourne Cup placegetter Who Shot Thebarman continues his Sydney Cup campaign this weekend racing second-up in the Sky High Stakes 2015 at Rosehill Gardens.

The Kiwi import is a proven two-miler having won the Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m) back home in New Zealand last autumn.

He travelled down under and make his Australian debut then in the Sydney Cup over the same distance during last year’s The Championships, but could only manage to run ninth to The Offer.

This Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival the Yamanin Vital gelding again targets the $1.6 million Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) run at Royal Randwick on April 11.

Futures Sydney Cup odds are led by Protectionist at $4.60 with Who Shot Thebarman not far behind as the $8 third pick through Ladbrokes.com.au.

He earned his spot high up the futures Sydney Cup betting markets back in November when improving off a 13th in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) to run a brave third to the now Kris Lees-trained Protectionist, who runs in the $1 million Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington this weekend, in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) last November.

His resuming run was at Warwick Farm on February 28 in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m).

Despite the race only being over a mile, Who Shot Thebarman producing a cracking late run and finished under one and a half lengths away fifth to John O’Shea’s import Contriubter.

This weekend he runs again up in distance for the $150,000 Group 3 McGrath Estate Agents Sky High Stakes (2000m) on Coolmore Classic Day.

The set weights plus penalties showdown has attracted a final field of 10 stayers, Who Shot Thebarman to jump from barrier 7 with Christian Reith in the saddle.

He is one of an imposing five final Sky High Stakes acceptors for Sydney’s premier trainer Waller.

Waller also saddles-up Beaten Up (barrier five), Hawkspur (barrier two), Opinion (barrier six) and Junoob (barrier three) who all come off unplaced autumn runs.

Along with Who Shot Thebarman meanwhile the other major Sydney Cup-bound galloper using the Sky High as a lead-up is Godolphin’s Hartnell in barrier nine for jockey James McDonald.

The imported British galloper has had just the one run down under when crossing second to stablemate Contributer in the Chipping Norton Stakes.

Hartnell is also eyeing a Sydney Cup run over a distance he’s comfortable at, the Authorized four-year-old having won the Listed Queen’s Vase (3200m) at Ascot last June.

He is currently sandwiched between Protectionist and Who Shot Thebarman in the Sydney Cup futures odds at a quote of $6 ahead of his second run on Aussie turf this weekend.

Anthony Cummings meanwhile saddles-up his former autumn star Fiveandahalfstar in the race after two disappointing runs on the back of a year-long stint on the sidelines.

Winner of the 2013 The BMW, Fiveandahalfstar was injured and spent nearly 12 months away from racing.

His latest run was a 10th in the Chipping Norton Stakes, but over 2000m he should be ready to improve third-up.
