Peggy Jean Leads 2015 Kewney Stakes Field

Headlining the field is Gerald Ryan’s Peggy Jean, who will enjoy a jump from barrier five with Hugh Bowman to ride.

The filly has placed in half of her ten career starts but has had a string of bad luck lately, running outside the placings in all five of her past starts.

Peggy Jean enjoyed a minor placing in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) last autumn, finishing just a quarter of a length behind Bring Me The Maid in second place. She then lined up in the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on April 12, winning the $1 million race during The Championships series.

The filly ended her autumn campaign as a two-year-old in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) however she may not have run out the mile, finishing four and a half lengths behind winner Go Indy Go in fifth place.

Peggy Jean had just two starts during the spring, returning to the spelling paddock after running end of the field in both the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m). Four months later she resumed in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m), finishing not far behind the leaders in fourth place. The filly was last seen running tenth in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) on February 28.

Mick Price has boosted his odds of winning the 2015 Kewney Stakes after accepting with all four of his nominated fillies – Samartested, Royal Ocean, Bottle Of Smoke, and Bayoonah.

Samartested earned a minor placing in the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) two weeks ago and will jump from barrier eight with Glen Boss, Royal Ocean last won the Listed Morphettville Guineas (1600m) back in September and will enjoy a jump from barrier two with Chad Schofield, the lightly-raced Bottle Of Smoke will start in barrier four with champion hoop Craig Newitt, and Bayoonah will have to overcome a wide start from gate 15 in her first black-type race.

Angus Armansaco winner Sabatini is set to continue her winninng campaign in the Kewney Stakes after winning both her first two starts, including the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m). The Lee & Shannon Hope-trained filly will need to overcome an awkward start from barrier 13 with Nicholas Hall, which is a far cry from the inside gate she’s enjoyed her last two starts.

The inside jump from barrier one will be held by Team HawkesLondon Lolly on Saturday. The filly has only won two of her 10 career starts and finished sixth (of nine) when resuming in the Group 3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m) on February 27.

Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) minor placer Wawail will jump from barrier three with Michael Walker to ride.
