Deep Field Tops 2015 Maurice McCarten Stakes Field

The Team Hawkes-trained TJ Smith Stakes hopeful Deep Field heads a small but class field in Saturday’s Maurcie McCarten Stakes 2015 at Rosehill Racecourse in Sydney.

A four-year-old Northern Meteor entire, Deep Field leads an eight-horse field in this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Smooth FM Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m) that runs as Coolmore Classic Day Race 2 at 1:00pm (AEDT).

The up-and-comer is drawn midfield in barrier four for jockey Tommy Berry who jumps aboard the five-time winner for the first time.

Deep Field has had just the six starts and is yet to finish out of the money, his only loss to date being his last start third behind the world’s equal highest-rated sprinter Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on February 21.

He now goes second-up in the Maurice McCarten Stakes against much easier company and will start clear favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Undefeated with two previous second-up victories, Deep Field heads towards a run in the lucrative $2.5 million Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on Day 1 of The Championships, April 4.

Futures TJ Smith Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are currently led by his stablemate Chautauqua ($3.80), Darley Classic winner Terravista ($4) and champion sprinter Lankan Rupee ($4.80) who all face off in Melbourne’s $1 million Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Deep Field meanwhile is also a top fancy in the all-in TJ Smith Stakes betting markets at a current quote of $10.

He carries the 58kg top weight on Saturday however giving away notable weight to the rest of the field.

The two next highest-rated and weighted runners in the Maurice McCarten Stakes field this year are the Garry Frazer-trained Hurrara and Gary Portelli’s I’m All The Talk both on 54.5kg and drawn in barriers five and six respectively.

Hawkesbury-based Hussonet seven-year-old Hurrara comes off a first-up last over 1100m at the track but is tipped to improve second-up in his 46th career start.

He was beaten eight lengths in the Benchmark 90 handicap last time out but carted the imposing 63kg top weight giving him a massive advantage dropping back 8.5kg for this weekend.

I’m All The Talk was also unplaced first-up last time out but in much tougher company, the progressive Stratum four-year-old far from disgraced when sixth in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 28.

He was beaten under three lengths that day, carrying only 52.5kg, but is yet to win in his three previous Rosehill runs leading into Saturday.

Other notable hopes looking to run second to Deep Field include the Joe Pride-trained stakes winner Target In Sight, Chris Waller’s Kencella who has three previous wins over the track and distance, and Tahitian Black.

David Pfieffer’s Lonhro seven-year-old Tahitian Black comes off a string of good runs, the evergreen veteran lining up for his 49th start here.

He won over 1000m at Randwick last month and was last seen finishing second to Just A Girl in the same February 21 race at Rosehill that Hurrah was last over the line in with the heavy impost.
