Dear Demi Heads 2015 Coolmore Classic Field & Weights

Clarry Conners’ former Crown Oaks winner Dear Demi is the top-rated and weighted acceptor for the Coolmore Classic 2015 in Sydney this Saturday.

A final field of 13 fillies and mares faces off in the $600,000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on the weekend, Dehere five-year-old Dear Demi carrying 58kg.

No horse since Sunline (60kg in 2002) has carried more than 57kg to victory in the Coolmore Classic however giving Conners’ mare a mighty task this weekend.

She is second-up for the season following a fifth to the now injured and likely to be retired Danesiri in the Group 3 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm on February 28.

Jockey Jim Cassidy stays on and shoots for his fifth Coolmore Classic victory.

He boasts four previous wins in the race including last year aboard Steps In Time (2014).

Dear Demi however has drawn wide in barrier 12, a gate that hasn’t produced a Coolmore Classic winner since Cassidy won his first in 1986 aboard Satin Sand.

Also drawn wide is the sure-to-be favourite in the Coolmore Classic odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, the John Thompson-trained First Seal in barrier 11 for Blake Shinn.

Shinn rode Appearance (2013) to victory in the Coolmore two years back and is after another, this time aboard Fastnet Rock three-year-old filly First Seal.

She carries 55.5kg, which no three-year-old filly has won with since Assertive Lass (55.5kg).

Barrier 11 meanwhile produced back-to-back Coolmore Classic winners with Camino Rose (1999) and Sunline (2000m), but none since.

First Seal has finished out of the money just once in her eight-start career to date, which is highlighted by her Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) victory at Randwick during the spring.

She was last seen winning the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) in late February on Chipping Norton Stakes Day by a tidy two and three-quarter lengths, a run she’ll need to be improving on to match the older mares in Group 1 company on Saturday.

Another Group 1 winner in the Coolmore Classic mix meanwhile is the Chris Waller-trained Amicus.

Another young three-year-old looking to be the first of that age to beat older rivals in Group 1 company for the first time this season, Amicus won the Thousand Guineas over the Caulfield mile last October.

She has had two runs this time in, most recently running fourth to fellow Fastnet Rock filly First Seal in the Surround Stakes.

Three-year-old fillies have won the Coolmore Classic 11 times since 1983, most recently in 2009 with Typhoon Tracy who carried just 51kg to victory.

While First Seal has the 55.5kg, Amicus in barrier two gets in on 52.5kg just a half-kilo above the minimum weight.

Notable hopes on that 52kg minimum include Peter & Paul Snowden’s Hussonet five-year-old Mahara coming off a Guy Walter Stakes third and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Zabeel filly Adrift who won the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at Randwick two back.

Other notable Coolmore Classic runners include Rex Lipp’s Magic Millions Stayers Cup winner Tinto from Toowoomba, Queensland Oaks runner-up Arabian Gold, recent Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) winner Thump and Peter Moody’s Millie Fox Stakes runner-up Plucky Belle.
