Always Allison Tops 2015 Magic Night Stakes Field

Chris Waller’s undefeated filly Always Allison looks like the two-year-old to beat in this Saturday’s Magic Night Stakes 2015 field at Rosehill Gardens.

The daughter of More Than Ready is one of 14 fillies making up the field for this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) on Coolmore Classic Day, but has drawn wide in barrier 11.

Always Allison debuted on February 4 with a two and a half-length win at Warwick Farm where she returned on 24 days later for her latest win, a half-length effort over Speak Fondly in the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m).

The Magic Night Stakes offers a ballot exemption to the winning filly for Saturday week’s $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m), an event Always Allison is a $21 shot through to win despite not yet being nominated for the world’s richest race for juveniles.

She won the Sweet Embrace from the inside alley however and so has a tougher test in the Magic Night Stakes from a double-digit gate.

Gai Waterhouse’s Sweet Embrace Stakes runner-up Speak Fondly also backs-up in the Magic Night Stakes on Saturday, the daughter of Northern Meteor after her maiden win.

Her first run was a nice third when under a length off Calaverite in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) during the spring before her second in the Group 2 at Warwick Farm.

Tommy Berry jumps on for his first ride on Speak Fondly, the filly needing to be at her best after drawing one outside Always Allison in barrier 12.

Waterhouse has three Magic Night Stakes runners this year also nominating for her Magic Millions Clockwise Classic winner from November Carriages and Right Of Way.

Also undefeated with two wins from as many starts along with Always Allison is the Gerald Ryan-trained Hinchinbrook filly Thorsborne who has the inside alley with barrier one for her black-type debut this weekend.

She won at Canberra in February and then took out Bathurst’s Gold Nugget at the start of March so will need to be improving in tougher company here.

Ryan’s other runners are Exceed And Excel filly Heavenly Hand in the outside draw (14) out to atone for her distant ninth to Always Allison in the Sweet Embrace and Perignon (barrier nine) coming off a seventh to English in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) at Randwick last Saturday.

The only other last-start winner in the field is the Clarry Conners-trained Look To The Stars.

A $101 roughie shot in futures Golden Slipper odds for the March 21 showdown, the I Am Invincible filly won over 1200m at Warwick Farm on March 4 from barrier four with Blake Shinn aboard, Shinn staying on in gate five in the Magic Night Stakes.

Look To The Stars will be joined in the field by stablemate Mowgli who won’t back-up in the Golden Slipper even if she improves enough on her Sweet Embrace Stakes fourth to win.

Other notable hopes in the line-up include Inglis Classic third placed Serenade for Michael Moroney, the John O’Shea-trained Sweet Embrace fifth placed Italy and her stablemate Igraine.
