2015 Golden Slipper: Headwater “Doubtful”, Lake Geneva a “Live Chance”

Headwater is the $11 third favourite in the Golden Slipper betting at Ladbrokes.com.au but it’s doubtful that the Team Hawkes-trained colt will even make the race field on March 21.

The two-year-old colt shot to the top of the futures betting after winning the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) on February 21 by two and a quarter lengths. He then finished third to Vancouver in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) last Saturday.

He was away well but could not cross and was forced to settle in third position three wide facing the breeze. The colt was the first to come under pressure and was poor to the line. A post race veterinary examination revealed the colt had a healing wound and when asked if he would progress to the 2015 Golden Slipper, co-trainer Wayne Hawkes simply said: “don’t know yet, maybe not.”

Without Headwater, Team Hawkes will still be represented in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) by Lake Geneva. The brothers think very highly of the filly, describing her as “flying” and a “live chance” in the $3.5 million feature race.

Lake Geneva has yet to win a race from her two starts but has managed to place in both the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) and Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m), in which the filly was wide in the early stages from barrier ten and eased to be 11th at the 600m before making ground between runners on straightening. She got to fifth at the 100m and kept running on well to score a minor placing in the $1 million race.

Wayne Hawkes has a very high opinion of the filly, believing she could have won the Blue Diamond if not for a wide starting gate (10).

“No one has given her anything. She could have been two out of two,” Hawkes said.

“It’s ridiculous what she did (in the Blue Diamond). The winner (Pride of Dubai) might have got stood on his head, but what she did was ridiculous.

“I’d like for her to draw an inside barrier (in the Diamond), give her a cuddle and she would have won by whatever. She should have won.

“She’s a live chance, a good chance. She’s had no hype, but that doesn’t worry us.”
