Seven-year-old gelding Sertorius is ready to tackle the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1200m) at Flemington this Saturday, in what could well be his lone autumn start.
Sertorius is one of 14 horses nominated for the 2015 Blamey Stakes and is set to carry the top weight of 59kg alongside Smokin’ Joey.
Trainers Jamie Edwards & Bruce Elkington plan on keeping the gelding at his best for a cups assault during the spring, which means limited starts during the autumn racing carnival. He will only receive one more start following the Blamey Stakes, if that.
“He’s ready to rock ‘n’ roll,” Edwards told TVN.
“He’s only going to have a very light autumn. He’ll only have one, maybe two runs then get put away.
“He didn’t come up in the spring last year after he had a tough autumn, we’re not going to do that to him again. We’re going to give him a light autumn.”
Sertorius tackled a hard autumn campaign last year that kicked off with a runner-up finish to Moment Of Change in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m). The gelding had a subsequent five starts, earning minor placings in the Blamey Stakes and Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m), however he failed to win any with his last win coming in the Group 2 Zipping Classic (2400m) back in 2013.
He was unable to recapture any of this form during the spring, running unplaced in all four of his starts, including three Group One races. The gelding was last seen running eighth in the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) on October 22. However he is in great shape ahead of his return to the track according to Edwards.
Sertorius had a good barrier trial last week and this morning (Tuesday) worked “beautifully” on the course proper at Geelong.
