Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Warwick Farm horseman Clarry Conners is hoping his smart filly Look To The Stars can handle a rise in grade this Saturday in Sydney’s Magic Night Stakes to earn a 2015 Golden Sipper start back at Rosehill Gardens the following weekend.
Both the $175,000 Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) for the fillies and the $175,000 Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) for the colts and geldings offer a ballot free ride to the winner into the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) on March 21.
And that is exactly what Conners is hoping to achieve with his I Am Invincible filly Look to The Stars, one of 18 Magic Night Stakes nominees this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
Chris Waller’s Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) winner Always Alison leads the Magic Night Stakes charge this year.
The daughter of More Than Ready has won both of her career starts to date and is a $21 shot in futures Golden Slipper betting at Ladbrokes.com.au despite not yet being nominated for the race.
Look To The Stars meanwhile can be found right down the other end of the all-in Golden Slipper odds, led by Gai Waterhouse’s super impressive Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) winning colt Vancouver ($3.20), rated a $101 roughie.
She has had four career starts so far for a win and two seconds, but just one of those runs has been in black type company.
She ran second in her two opening runs in Sydney in December before running a disappointing ninth when beating home just one other runner in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) on February 14 at Randwick won by Haptic.
Conners then dropped her back in class on March 4 at Warwick Farm to build up her confidence with a win in a no-maiden-wins run over 1200m where she scored by a half-length, and earned a Magic Night Stakes assignment.
Conners boasts an imposing Golden Sipper record having prepared four previous winners, but none since Belle Du Jour (2000) 15 years ago.
His best chance to break the drought this year looked to be Aegean Sea who won on debut at Kensington in November before a leg injury ruled her out of the autumn.
Along with Look To The Stars, he also has Mowgli lining up in the Magic Night Stakes on Saturday but she is not looking to push her way into the Golden Slipper field.
The Not A Single Doubt filly comes off a fourth to Always Allison in the Sweet Embrace Stakes, which could prove the form line to follow in the Magic Night, and is at $81 to win the Slipper despite Conners ruling that out as an option.
“The two fillies will run in the Magic Night and we will see how they go,” he told AAP this week.
“Look To The Stars might go to the Slipper if she goes well but the other one won’t go there.”
