2015 Queen Of The Turf Stakes First Acceptances Leave 60

First acceptances for the eight Group 1 The Championship races this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival closed on Monday with 60 fillies and mares left in contention for the Queen Of The Turf Stakes 2015.

Last month there were 104 nominations taken for this year’s $1 million Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m), that figure reduced by 44 yesterday at first declaration stage.

Leading the first acceptances is the John Thompson-trained Fastnet Rock filly First Seal, the three-year-old Flight Stakes winner racing this weekend after another Group 1 win this time in the Coolmore Classic at Rosehill.

She leads the early Queen Of The Turf Stakes odds at bookmakers around the country and is also still in the mix for a host of other majors over the two days of The Championships on April 4 and 11 including the Australian Oaks on Day 2.

All of the season’s headline female gallopers are high up the Queen Of The Turf Stakes betting markets after the first acceptances including Cosmic Endeavour and Catkins who ran the quinella in last Saturday’s Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m).

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Northern Meteor four-year-old Cosmic Endeavour was impressive winning her second Group 1 after a Tattersall’s Tiara victory in Brisbane during the winter, while Chris Waller’s great grey Catkins was far from disgraced just a half-length off the winner.

Waterhouse has a total of 11 Queen Of The Turf Stakes entries still in contention this year including also her Light Fingers Stakes winner Adrift and Surround Stakes runner-up to First Seal last time out Supara.

Waller also has a host of livewire chances entered along with Catkins including last year’s Thousand Guineas winner Amicus, 2013 Australian Oaks winner Royal Descent and Flight Stakes runner-up Winx.

The other headline first acceptor for the weight-for-age classic is Lucia Valentina for Newcastle’s Kris Lees, the Savabeel four-year-old last seen running ninth in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m).

She’s tipped to improve on that getting out over more distance however after her third to the ill-fated Admire Rakti in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) during the spring on the back of a Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) victory at Flemington.

Other notable Queen Of The Turf Stakes hopes still in contention include Nigel Blackiston’s Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) winner form last month Suavito, last year’s Queensland Oaks runner-up Arabian Gold, Peter Moody’s Victorian-trained filly Thinking Of You and Pat Hyland’s Myer Classic winning six-year-old Bonaria.

The most notable non-acceptor meanwhile is last year’s Golden Slipper winning filly Mossfun who instead targets the $2.5 million Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on Day 1 of The Championships over less distance.

Queen Of The Turf Stakes 2015 final acceptances close at 9am (AEDT) on Tuesday April 7.
