2015 Maurice McCarten Stakes Nominations Feature Chautauqua

The Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained star sprinter Chautauqua features in the Maurice McCarten Stakes 2015 nominations in Sydney as a Plan B this Saturday.

There are just 10 sprinters making up the early entries for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Smooth FM Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on Coolmore Classic Day.

The field for the handicap clash however is likely to drop away further numbers-wise with the headline entry Chautauqua confirmed to contest the $1 million Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington.

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes told the Herald Sun the Sydney nomination was simply a precaution in case of a sudden turn of bad weather in Melbourne for Super Saturday.

“Who knows what might happen? The track might be under water,” Hawkes said on Monday.

Even with last start Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) winner Chautauqua, runner-up to Terravista in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) last November, going to Melbourne the stable could still have a Maurice McCarten runner in Sydney.

Team Hawkes have three nominees in the race with Chautauqua joined by the super-consistent Deep Field and young Nostradamus.

Four-year-old Northern Meteor stallion Deep Field has won five of his six career starts to date, his only loss being a last start third to the world’s equal highest-rated sprinter Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) down the Flemington straight on February 21.

Medaglia D’Oro colt Nostradamus, who is also a Newmarket Handicap nominee, meanwhile is looking to improve on a first-up eighth to Shamal Wind in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 28.

Following Chautauqua (60.5kg) and Deep Field (58kg) in the Maurice McCarten Stakes weights are then just two other runners weighted above the 54kg minimum with seven-year-old Hurrara and four-year-old I’m All The Talk getting in on 54.5kg.

The Gary Portelli-trained Stratum entire I’m All The Talk has had one run this time in when sixth in the Oakleigh Plate, the Stratum four-year-old after his first win since the Group 3 Skyline Stakes (1200m) exactly a year ago this weekend.

Other noteworthy entries include the Chris Waller-trained Kencella and Gai Waterhouse’s Queensland Guineas placegetter Ryker.
