A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
This Saturday Flemington Racecourse will play host to two Group One races as well as a number of key supporting black-type races, including the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m).
A talented field of 14 horses has been nominated to tackle the mile, including Nigel Blackiston’s Suavito. The four-year-old mare is in perfect form, winning her past three starts. After enjoying success in the Group 3 Eliza Park International Stakes (1600m) and Group 2 Momentum Energy Stakes (2000m) during the spring, the four-year-old was spelled for three and a half months.
Suavito resumed in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) on February 28, taking on the likes of Dissident and Smokin’ Joey. The mare blitzed the boys, winning the $400,000 feature race by one and a quarter lengths.
The mare is set to get her next start at Flemington this Saturday but whether it’s in the Blamey Stakes or Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy (1600m) is still to be decided. If she tackles the set weights of the Blamey Stakes the mare will carry 57kg, a 1,5kg swing compared to the Schweppervescence Trophy.
Suavito could go head-to-head with Futurity Stakes rival Smokin’ Joey on Saturday as the Wez Hunter-trained gelding was also nominated for the Blamey Stakes.
Smokin’ Joey had a run of bad luck last year, running outside the placings in all six of his starts. It looked to continue into the autumn after the gelding ran fourth in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) first-up but he broke through to win the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) on February 14 followed by a runner-up finish in the Futurity.
The gelding will carry the topweight of 59kg, along with Sertorius, which is in line with the weight he’s carried his past four times out.
Jamie Edwards & Bruce Elkington’s Sertorius will also shoulder the top weight. The seven-year-old gelding was a minor placer in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) last autumn but has failed to place in any of his four subsequent starts and hasn’t been seen since the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) back in October.
David Hayes & Tom Dabernig could deliver a dual-pronged attack on the 2015 Blamey Stakes after nominating both Jacquinot Bay and Guest Of Honour.
Jacquinot Bay enjoyed a winning treble during the summer, which included the Listed Lord Stakes (1600m) and Summer Championship (1600m), and finished second to Smokin’ Joey in the Carlyon Cup, just finding himself out bobbed on the line after a late surge.
Guest Of Honour resumed in the Futurity Stakes, finishing fifth behind Suavito. It was the horse’s first start since failing to finish the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) back in October.
Some other notable 2015 Blamey Stakes nominated horses include Michael Kent’s Epingle, Tony McEvoy’s Mouro, Mick Price’s Count Of Limonade, and New Zealand Group One runner-up Natuzzi.
The final field and barrier draw for the Blamey Stakes will be released on Wednesday, after which the betting markets will go live at Ladbrokes.com.au.
