The 2015 T.J. Smith Stakes first acceptances have been released and the majority of the best sprinters in Australia all remain on track to contest the Group 1 event at Royal Randwick on the opening day of The Championships.
Lankan Rupee stamped himself as the highest-rated sprinter in the world with an explosive victory in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) last year and he will likely have the chance to defend his title in 2015.
The Redoute’s Choice gelding recorded only one win during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, but he returned to winning form with a scintillating victory in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on February 21 and he is set to return to racing in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) this weekend.
You can find the best 2015 T.J. Smith Stakes odds for Lankan Rupee with leading online bookmaker Ladbrokes.com.au.
Another sprinter that is set to contest the Newmarket Handicap on Saturday is Terravista, who has been given the task of becoming the first sprinter since 1917 to win the famous sprinter first-up.
Terravista lived up to trainer Joe Pride’s expectations when he took out the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival and the trainer is confident that the Captain Rio gelding can take out the Newmarket Handicap before returning to Sydney for the T.J. Smith Stakes.
Rounding out the three leading contenders in the Newmarket Handicap this weekend is Chautauqua and the talented sprinter has been included in the T.J. Smith Stakes first acceptances as well as those for the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m).
Chautauqua returned to racing with a narrow win in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on February 7 and has the chance to record his maiden win at the highest level of racing in the Newmarket Handicap this weekend.
Team Hawkes could be well represented in the T.J. Smith Stakes and they have also included Deep Field, Mossfun, Nostradamus and Our Boy Malachi in the nominations for the $2.5 million event.
Another training partnership that could be well-represented in the 2015 T.J. Smith Stakes is that of David Hayes and Tom Dabernig, who have eight horses in the first acceptances.
Fast ‘N’ Rocking hit the line strongly to finish third in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes and appears to be the stables most likely winning chances, but Afleet Esprit, Galaxy Pegasus, Girl Guide, Gregers and Sistonic all remain in the first acceptances.
Melito is the only three-year-old that has won the T.J. Smith Stakes in the past decade, but there are a number of three-year-olds that remain a chance to contest the Group 1 event during The Championships.
Brazen Beau made his open racing debut with a second place finish in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes and he looms as the major danger to the three favourites in the Newmarket Handicap, while Bring Me The Maid, Delectation, Earthquake, Kumaon, Kuro, Press Report, Rubick and Wawail are other three-year-olds that remain in T.J. Smith Stakes contention.
Other notable horses in the 2015 T.J. Smith Stakes first acceptances included Group 1 placegetter Angelic Light, last start winner Chloe In Paris, Gai Waterhouse-trained Driefontein, popular mare Miracles Of Life, Gary Portelli-trained Rebel Dane, veteran sprinter Tiger Tees and two-time Group 1 winner Trust In A Gust.
