Sabatini Headlines 2015 Kewney Stakes Nominations

The Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) is one of seven black-type races running at Flemington on Saturday. Nominations for the race closed this morning (Monday) with 23 three-year-old fillies declaring their interest in the $200,000 race.

Headlining the field is the Lee & Shannon Hope-trained Sabatini, who has won her two starts this campaign.

The three-year-old filly was third in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at the end of spring back in October before resuming four months later in the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) on February 14. After beginning nicely the filly settled into an ideal spot, fourth on the rails. She was blocked in the straight but got a split at 150m, finished too well to win by three-quarters of a length.

Two weeks later Sabatini took on 11 rivals in the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield, which she won in good style by one length.

Mick Price dominates the 2015 Kewney Stakes nominations with four potential runners – Bayoonah, Bottle Of Smoke, Royal Ocean, and Samartested.

The lightly races Bayoonah has had just three career starts, winning her maiden at Geelong on January 4, while Bottle Of Smoke ran fourth to stable mate Sabatini in the Angus Armanasco Stakes on the back of two minor race wins.

Royal Ocean won the Listed Morphettville Guineas (1600m) back in September but has run unplaced in all three of her subsequent starts, including the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m). Finally Samartested has placed in six of her seven career starts, which includes a minor placing in the Angus Armanasco three weeks ago.

The training duo of David Hayes & Tom Dabernig along with Peter Moody have both nominated two fillies each for the race.

Hayes & Dabernig will potentially saddle Jurasound and Wawail while Moody has nominated Clover Lane and Thinking Of You.

Jurasound will step up to black-type racing for the first time after winning a Benchmark 70 over a mile on February 20 and her stable mate Wawail has won four of her five career starts, including the Listed Twilight Glow Stakes (1400m) back in November. Her winning record was broken in the Group 3 Vanity (1400m) on February 21, in which she ran third.

Clover Lane ran sixth in the same race while Thinking Of You has run unplaced in her two campaign starts this autumn. The Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) third placer ran second last in the Kevin Hayes Stakes and fifth in the Angus Armanasco, losing both to Sabatini.

Other talented fillies nominated for the 2015 Kewney Stakes include Pat Carey’s Cristalina Lago, Group One runner Eloping, and Gerald Ryan’s Peggy Jean.
