Red Cadeaux has returned to Australia for the fifth time in his racing career and he is set to contest the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on Saturday before he heads to Sydney for the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 28 and the Sydney Cup a fortnight later.

The veteran galloper has become one of the most popular international horses to run in Australia after finishing second in three of the past four editions of the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) and will be having his first run in Australia outside of ‘the race that stops a nation’ this preparation.

Protectionist was far too good for Red Cadeaux in the final stages of the 2014 Melbourne Cup and the pair are still an outside chance of facing off in the Sydney Cup.

The Monsun entire will contest the Australian Cup this weekend and if he is unable to perform at his best over 2000 metres is a chance of being stepped up in trip for races like The BMW and the Sydney Cup.

You can find the best odds for Protectionist or any other horses in the 2015 Sydney Cup betting market with Ladbrokes.com.au.

Chris Waller-trained Who Shot Thebarman rounded out the Melbourne Cup trifecta and is heading towards the Sydney Cup for the second year in a row.

Who Shot Thebarman finished ninth in the Sydney Cup last year, but he has improved significantly since joining the Waller stable and he returned to racing with a fast-finishing fifth in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm on February 28.

Other Melbourne Cup runners that have been included in the 2015 Sydney Cup first acceptances include imported galloper Au Revoir, the Chris Waller-trained duo of Junoob and Opinion and veteran stayer Royal Diamond.

Godolphin are chasing their first win in the Sydney Cup after finishing fifth with Tupac Amaru in the 2014 edition of the race and they could have three runners in the race this year.

Hartnell was set for The BMW and Sydney Cup at the start of his preparation and he showed that he was more than capable of performing at the highest level of racing when he stormed home late to finish second behind Contributer in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm last weekend.

Other Godolphin horses that are a chance of contesting the Sydney Cup are Liverpool City Cup winner It’s Somewhat and the out-of-form Tupac Amaru.

Leading New Zealand trainer Murray Baker has had plenty of success during the 2015 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival in recent year and he has included a couple of horses in the 2015 Sydney Cup first acceptances.

Maygrove won the Group 2 Wellington Cup (2400m) at Trentham on January 24 and made his Australian racing debut with a credible fourth in the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) last weekend, while Show The World finished an unlucky fourth in the Group 2 Avondale Cup (2400m) at Ellerslie on February 14.

Other notable horses in the 2015 Sydney Cup first acceptances include Queensland Derby winner Sonntag, Caulfield Cup runner-up Rising Romance, last start winner Sir John Hawkwood, Gai Waterhouse-trained Greatwood and Herbert Power Stakes winner Big Memory.
