This Saturday in Sydney the two-year-old Golden Slipper hopes get a final chance to qualify for the $3.5 million Group 1 with two races offering an exemption for March 21 running including the Magic Night Stakes 2015 for the fillies.
The $175,000 Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) has this year drawn 18 young fillies at nomination stage looking for an 11th hour shot at the Golden Slipper Stakes over the same track and distance later in this month at Rosehill Racecourse.
The last filly to come close to completing the Magic Night Stakes – Golden Slipper double however was Victory Vein (2002) who was runner-up in the Group 1 over a decade ago.
In both 2005 with Media and 2003 with Portillo however the Magic Night Stakes winner ran third in the Golden Slipper.
This year the Gai Waterhouse-trained Vancouver ($3.20) is the clear Golden Slipper betting favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au after his easy three and a half-length Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) win at Randwick last weekend.
The shortest priced of the Magic Night Stakes nominees in the all-in Golden Slipper odds meanwhile is the currently not-nominated Always Allison for Sydney’s ace trainer Chris Waller.
The More Than Ready filly pays $21 to win the Slipper despite not yet being officially entered for the race.
She’s undefeated in two runs however, both at Warwick Farm, earning talks of her Slipper bid when winning the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) on February 28.
At a similar Golden Slipper quote of $26 is then Sweet Embrace Stakes runner-up Speak Fondly, also nominated for a Magic Night Stakes rematch this weekend.
Waterhouse’s Northern Meteor filly was third on debut at Randwick last October in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) and was then only a half-length off Always Allison in the Sweet Embrace first-up.
Five-time Golden Slipper winning trainer Waterhouse also has her Ballarat Magic Millions Clockwise Classic winner Carriages and a daughter of Denman Right Of Way nominated for the Magic Night this autumn.
Along with Always Allison Waller meanwhile also has Navua Mist in the mix, the Exceed And Excel filly having had just the one start at Rosehill when second on debut last month.
Another undefeated filly along with Always Allison is the Gerald Ryan-trained Thorsborne who won at Canberra last month before retaining her unbeaten form with a March 1 win at Bathurst over 1100m in the Gold Nugget.
Ryan’s other Magic Night Stakes entries are Heavenly Hand who won on debut in December before a Sweet Embrace Stakes ninth last time out and Snitzel filly Perignon.
Other notable Magic Night Stakes nominees include the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Haybah coming off a string of good interstate runs including a Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000m) second in Melbourne and last start Listed win at Morphettville, and the John O’Shea-trained Widden Stakes third placegetter Igraine.
See below for the full Magic Night Stakes 2015 nominations, the field and barriers set for release on Wednesday.
