2015 Adelaide Cup Betting Tips

The Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) is the feature race running at Morphettville this afternoon (Monday) with 14 stayers set to tackle the two mile trip. With only a handful of Australian races run over two miles throughout the year, it is a rare chance for these horses to stretch their legs and tackle the distance.

Running as race 7 at 4:00pm (local time), the Adelaide Cup has attracted a classy field of 14 horses, three of which are offering single figure odds in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Darren Weir’s Taiyoo continues to lead the field at odds of $4.20, though this has lengthened from his opening price of $3.60. The five-year-old gelding will have to overcome an outside start from the second widest gate and carry the lone top weight of 59kg. Perhaps punters are simply wary of Taiyoo lasting the two miles on his twelfth start this campaign.

Check out our betting tips for the 2015 Adelaide Cup below to get a better understanding of who to put your money on this afternoon.

1st

#3 Renew ($5)

Archie Alexander’s five-year-old gelding is one of only two runners that have previously won over two miles and will have the advantage of an inside jump from barrier two. Renew travelled to Australia under the care of Marco Botti during the spring with plans to run in the 2014 Melbourne Cup, however end of the field runs in both the Group 2 Herbert Power (2400m) and Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) put an end to them. Connections decided to keep the gelding in Australia and transfer him to the stables of Alexander, after which he finished runner-up in the Visit Victoria Plate (2800m) before winning the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m). After an 11 week spell, the gelding resumed for two unplaced runs between 2000-2500m but will enjoy the return to 3200m this afternoon.

2nd

#1 Taiyoo ($4.20)

The Darren Weir-trained gelding has gone from strength to strength this campaign, winning all five of his past starts; however he could be forgiven if his stamina is lacking considering Taiyoo has had 12 starts since October last year with no break. Taiyoo stepped up to black-type racing for the first time on February 20, winning the Listed Torney Night Cup (2500m) very well. Just eight days later he travelled to Morphettville for the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m), which he won by half a length. Taiyoo has good form but a wide start and hefty weight could be his downfall.

3rd

#5 Lucky Lucky Lucky ($4.80)

One of two horses saddled by Tony McEvoy in the Adelaide Cup, Lucky Lucky Lucky was last seen running a close second to Taiyoo in the Lord Reims Stakes on February 28. The five-year-old gelding challenged strongly rounding the home turn and fought on hard but was just beaten in the final 50m. He has finished in the first two in all three of his starts since transferring to McEvoy’s stables in January, which includes winning the Rain Lover Plate (1950m) and finishing runner-up in the Listed Birthday Cup (2032m). Lucky Lucky Lucky will jump from barrier 11 with Kerrin McEvoy and carry the minimum weight of 53kg. The gelding is the market mover of the field after his price shortened from $5.
