Fontelina Scratched from 2015 Canterbury Stakes

Fontelina will miss the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Randwick this Saturday after the six-year-old gelding was kicked by a stablemate this morning (Friday).

Trainer Anthony Cummings was forced to scratch the gelding from the $500,000 feature race.

“A horse got excited behind him, lashed out and caught him on the shoulder,” he told TVN.

“There is a bit of pain there so he had to be scratched.

“He has got a little cut, nothing too serious but I’d say he will have to be on the slow list for a week.”

Fontelina was a $7.50 hopeful in the Canterbury Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au before he was scratched from the race and his trainer was confident the gelding had what it took to figure in the race against the likes of Catkins, Sacred Falls, and Criterion.

The injury isn’t too serious and the gelding will now be kept for the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on March 27.

“It is disappointing because the horse had been working well and looked a chance on Saturday,” Cummings said.

“We will just have to wait for the William Reid now.”

By resuming in the 2015 William Reid Stakes it will mark over one year since the gelding was last seen on the track. He had just two starts in the Melbourne Autumn Carnival last year, misfiring in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) first up.

Fontelina stumbled at the start, down on his nose, but had the inside barrier so drove along the fence before weakening out very quickly to finish twelve and a half lengths off winner Lankan Rupee in second last place.

13 days later he was one of 10 horses lined up for the William Reid Stakes. The gelding drove forward to sit fourth and strung up between horses to the turn. He looked to be bolting but had no clear running. He was checked twice in the straight and missed out on a win by a nose when out flashed by Spirit Of Boom.

Adjusted 2015 Canterbury Stakes markets have Catkins as the $2.80 favourite followed by Cosmic Endeavour ($3.30) and Tiger Tees ($7).
