Just five two-year-old colts and geldings will be lining up in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Randwick this Saturday, making it one of the smallest juvenile race fields this season.
However don’t let the size of the field fool you, this race is all about quality and is set to have the biggest bearing on 2015 Golden Slipper markets.
Three of the top four colts in the Golden Slipper betting at Ladbrokes.com.au – Headwater, Vancouver, and Furnaces – will clash for the first time in Saturday’s race. This means the result of the 2015 Todman Stakes will dramatically effect the betting for the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on March 21.
Headwater is the current favourite to take out the $3.5 million juvenile race in two weeks but both Vancouver and Furnaces have held the top spot at different times.
In keeping with the market, Headwater is the $1.80 odds-on favourite to win the Todman Stakes while Vancouver ($3.20) and Furnaces ($4.60) round out the single figure betting.

#2 Headwater ($1.80)
Team Hawkes’ two-year-old colt shot to the top of the Golden Slipper futures betting after his dominant victory in the Group 2 Silver Slipper (1100m) on February 21, which is considered a key lead-up race to the world’s richest juvenile race on March 21. Headwater left very fast out the gates to find the front and led by half a length at the 500m. He kicked right away and brained them on the line in a devastating two and a quarter length win. It was the second win from two starts for Headwater, who will jump from the outside gate with Blake Shinn to ride.
#3 Vancouver ($3.20)
The Gai Waterhouse-trained Vancouver has won his two career starts to date – the Listed Breeders Plate (1000m) and Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) – but hasn’t been seen since the end of January. The colt was a surprise non-acceptor for the Silver Slipper Stakes two weeks ago with connections opting to keep him fresh for the Todman Stakes, so he’ll need to deliver on race day. He ran in a barrier trial at Randwick on February 23 instead of the Silver Slipper, which he blitzed by three and a half lengths. Vancouver will jump from barrier three with champion hoop Tommy Berry as jockey.
#1 Mishani Honcho ($31)
Punters looking for a lucrative Todman Stakes betting opportunity should look no further than roughie Mishani Honcho with a win price of $31 or $12.50 to place. The Les Ross-trained gelding has experience over his four rivals with eight career starts to his name, all but one of which he placed in. Mishani Honcho has won three of his four trips over 1200m and was last seen running third to Headwater in the Silver Slipper. The gelding will enjoy the inside jump from barrier one with Chris Whiteley to ride.
