The 2015 Autumn Racing Carnival is heating up in Sydney this weekend with an action-packed race meeting at Royal Randwick Racecourse. The Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) is the key supporting race, attracting a field of nine sprinters.
The betting remains fairly open at Ladbrokes.com.au with all but one runner offering single figure odds, although Rubick is the firm favourite at $2.90.
The Gerald Ryan-trained three-year-old colt will jump from barrier four with Kerrin McEvoy and is resuming from a four month spell in the paddock.
Rubick is a lightly run horse compared to some of his rivals but has already impressed in his five career starts. Will he be able to win the 2015 Challenge Stakes first up? Check out our betting tips for the race below.
#5 Miracles Of Life ($6)
Peter & Paul Snowden’s four-year-old mare is our pick to win the Challenge Stakes after dead heating with Bel Sprinter in the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint (1100m) back in October. Miracles Of Life has an impressive record over 1000m, finishing in the first two in five of her six starts, although it will be the first time she steps back to the distance since running second in the Listed Redelva Stakes (1050m) in April last year. Miracles Of Life will enjoy the inside jump from barrier one with Hugh Bowman to ride.
#8 Rubick ($2.90)
The three-year-old colt has won three of his five career starts, which includes the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) and Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1000m), but has failed to even place the two times he’s stepped up to Group One race. Rubick finished fourth in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) last February and end of the field in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on November 1, however he could just have an issue running out the distance. Rubick will carry just 56kg as he jumps from barrier four with Kerrin McEvoy.
#10 Mossfun ($9)
Rounding out our Challenge Stakes tips is the Team Hawkes-trained Mossfun, who’ll enjoy carrying the minimum weight of 54kg due to her age and sex. The three-year-old filly had a fantastic debut season last autumn, winning four of her five starts which included the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) that she won by four lengths and the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m). Mossfun missed the spring due to a virus, which means the filly had a lengthy spell of 10 months. She resumed in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) three weeks ago but didn’t finish the race off. Perhaps a return to 1000m, the same distance she won her maiden at, will help her run strongly in the Challenge Stakes.
