Headwater Odds-On Favourite in 2015 Todman Stakes Betting

A small field of just five colts and geldings will tackle the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Randwick this Saturday, giving their connections a clear understanding of whether they have what it takes to run in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on March 21.

Three of the five runners are offering single figure odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, led by Headwater at $1.80. The odds-on favourite will jump from the outside gate with Blake Shinn to ride.

Team Hawkes’ Headwater earned his short odds after winning the Group 2 Silver Slipper (1100m) two weeks ago on February 21. The colt left the gates very fast to find the front and led by half a length at the 500m. He kicked right away and brained them on the line in a devastating two and a quarter length win.

It was the second win for Headwater after he won his maiden at the end of December by two and three-quarter lengths. Bookies and punters alike are clearly expecting another easy win for the colt in the 2015 Todman Stakes.

Rounding out the single digit odds are Vancouver ($3.40) and Furnaces ($4.60).

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Vancouver won the Listed Breeders Plate (1000m) on debut in October before resuming to win the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) on January 31, proving he can handle a rain-affected track. The colt was last seen winning a barrier trial on February 23 by three and a half lengths and will enjoy a jump from barrier three with Tommy Berry to ride on Saturday.

John O’Shea will use the Todman Stakes to see if Furnaces has what it takes to join the already strong Godolphin assault on the 2015 Golden Slipper. Furnaces was runner-up to Haptic in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) three weeks ago and enjoyed a winning trial at Warwick Farm last Friday.

The colt has finished in the first two in both of his career starts and will jump from barrier two with James McDonald.

The roughies in the Todman Stakes betting are Voilier ($11) and Mishani Honcho ($31).

Gary Nickson’s Voilier was runner-up to Headwater in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) two weeks ago while Les Ross’ Mishani Honcho was third, so neither juvenile should be discounted.
