English Firms as 2015 Reisling Stakes Betting Favourite

14 promising juveniles will head to Randwick this Saturday, looking to earn their shot at making the 2015 Golden Slipper field. They will be separated by sex with nine fillies lining up in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m).

Five of the nine runners are offering single figure odds in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, giving punters a variety of options. Leading the charge is Gai Waterhouse’s English, who opened as $3 favourite but has since firm to $2.80 following support.

English is one of three last start winners in the 2015 Reisling Stakes field but one of just two runners with only one previous start.

The filly strongly won her maiden at Kembla Grove on January 31, beating runner-up Braemar by three and a half lengths. She has also blitzed her two barrier trials, the most recent of which was at Randwick on February 23. The filly showed good speed from a wide draw and raced on pace but was trapped very deep. She cornered nicely and took over, winning with ease in a lovely trial in a quick time. She finished five lengths in front at a time of 43.20 seconds.

English will enjoy a good jump out the gates from barrier three with Blake Shinn but will need to overcome a tough field of eight rivals, four of which are paying single figure odds.

  • #5 Ottoman ($4.80) – One of two Godolphin fillies in the race, Ottoman was an early favourite for the 2015 Golden Slipper after winning her maiden in December however she has slipped a bit after failing to place in the Group 2 Silver Slipper (1100m) on February 21. Her form has held up after beating Pride Of Dubai, who won the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) last Saturday. Ottoman will jump from barrier seven with James McDonald.
  • #1 Fireworks ($6) Gerald Ryan’s Fireworks will need to impress in the Reisling Stakes for owner John Camillieri to pay the $150,000 late entry fee for the Golden Slipper. She was set on a tentative path after winning the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) but Saturday will be her real test. The filly will jump from barrier six with Brenton Avdulla to ride.
  • #8 Stay With Me ($7.50)David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s filly ran second in the Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m) two weeks ago and is on track to complete the same Golden Slipper path as her dam Miss Finland back in 2006. If she can win the Reisling Stakes she will head towards the Slipper.
  • #4 Calaverite ($9.50) – Godolphin’s second runner rounds out the single figure odds. Calaverite won the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) on debut back in October but failed to place in the Listed Lonhro Stakes (1100m) three weeks ago. The filly will jump from barrier two with Sam Clipperton to ride.
