Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
It’s a Guineas-packed weekend with dual races running in Sydney and Melbourne on Saturday. Headlining the Flemington meeting is the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m), which will feature a capacity field of 16 runners.
The Gary Portelli-trained Testashadow was scratched from the race Thursday morning, which meant lone emergency runner Manapine stepped up to the plate.
The betting for the 2015 Australian Guineas remains fairly open with just four single figure hopefuls, led by Kermadec at $3.50.
Chris Waller’s three-year-old colt is the favourite after winning over the track and distance back in November in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) and finishing just a quarter of a length off winner Hallowed Crown in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) two weeks ago.
Kermadec has firmed from his opening price of $3.70 and will jump midfield from barrier eight with Nash Rawiller. He faces some tough competition from a talented field of three-year-olds, three of which are single figure hopefuls.
- #10 Alpine Eagle ($6.50) – Tony McEvoy three-year-old colt is the second favourite in the betting, having won four of his five career starts. Alpine Eagle stepped up to black-type racing for the first time in the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) last Saturday, winning the race a short half-head from Minnesinger. Alpine Eagle will back-up in the Australian Guineas, set to jump from barrier seven with Douglas Whyte to ride.
- #7 Wandjina ($8.50) – The Gai Waterhouse-trained colt has only won two of his 11 career starts, including the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) at Flemington two weeks ago. Wandjina earned a minor placing in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) back in October but failed to make anything of the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m). he should run well returning to the mile but will jump wide from barrier 10 wit Brett Prebble to ride.
- #5 Stratum Star ($9) – Darren Weir’s colt rounds out the single figure betting, having finished first three in all five of his past starts. Stratum Star won the Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) back in October before placing in races that include the Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) and CS Hayes Stakes. He will enjoy a start from barrier four with Brad Rawiller as jockey.
