Scorpio Queen Leads 2015 Wenona Girl Handicap Field & Weights

Kris Lees’ six-year-old mare Scorpio Queen is the top-rated and heaviest-weighted of 13 final acceptors for the Wenona Girl Handicap 2015 at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

The daughter of Choisir has her 27th career start in the $150,000 Group 3 Wenona Girl Handicap (1200m) on Randwick Guineas Day this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival and will carry 58kg giving all 12 of her rivals a half-kilo advantage.

She hasn’t won a race since the Listed Bernborough Handicap (1625m) at Toowoomba in December of 2013 so it has been a long time between drinks for the Newcastle-based Scorpio Queen.

Her last start was a close fourth behind Amovatio over the Randwick mile last November and she shoots for her second first-up win at her ninth attempt on the weekend.

All of the other mares in the field are allocated 57.5kg including Lees’ two other runners, Fine Bubbles and Brook Road.

While Scorpio Queen drew the inside alley in barrier one for her hoop Christian Reith to navigate from, stablemate Fine Bubbles and her jockey James McDonald have barrier 10 to overcome.

Casino Prince five-year-old Fine Bubbles also resumes racing here, the Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) winner at home at Newcastle last September last seen running second over 1350m at Rosehill on November 1.

Brook Road jumps from eight with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle, the ultra-consistent God’s Own four-year-old boasting nice form for this.

She had two previous starts over the track and distance for two seconds, and over the 1200m has a total of three wins and two seconds from five runs.

Also drawn wide with double digit gates in the Wenona Girl Handicap are Griante (11), Just A Girl (12) and My Sabeel (13).

The David Brideoake-trained Group 3 winning four-year-old Griante is second-up for the season following a nice fourth when beaten two and a quarter lengths by Tycoon Tara in the Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield in mid-February.

She hasn’t raced in Sydney before and is also yet to finish in the money second-up with this weekend her third attempt two runs in.

Just A Girl meanwhile comes into the race off far more encouraging form.

Luke Griffith’s Scone-based Not A Single Doubt five-year-old has won back-to-back races and is out to make it three straight for the season.

The first was over 1050m at Doomben on February 7 before her most recent effort over 1100m at Rosehill on February 21 when beating home Tahitian Black by a length.

My Sabeel is also three runs in this weekend, the Group 3 Triscay Stakes third placegetter out to atone for an 11th behind Danesiri in the Group 3 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm last Saturday.

Other notable Wenona Girl Handicap hopefuls this weekend include Gai Waterhouse’s resuming Group 2 placegetter Amanpour with a nice barrier three draw for her first run since finishing second to subsequent Futurity Stakes winner Suaviot at Flemington over 2000m on November 8, last start Group 3 Bow Mistress Stakes winner in Tasmania I Love It and the Team Hawkes-trained Mihiri coming off a third to Catkins in the Group 3 Breeders Classic (1200m) at Rosehill on February 7.
