Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Clarry Conners’ hopes of winning a fifth Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) have been reignited after two-year-old filly Look To The Stars was a late winner at Warwick Farm this afternoon (Wednesday).
Look To The Stars had come close to winning her maiden twice in December but was beaten to the post in the closing moments. She was then a disappointing second last in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) on February 14. After pushing up near the inside early the filly was midfield into the turn but just came up the slower part of the track, six lengths behind winner Haptic.
The filly was one of eight sprinters in the Schweppes Handicap (1200m) at Warwick Farm this afternoon with a starting price of $7 at Ladbrokes.com.au. The make-up of the race changed when favourite Leider was a late scratching due to playing up at the tie up stalls. This could have helped Look To The Stars score her first win after the filly powered to the line late and held off her fast finishing rival Petrossian.
Conners is now considering a run in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 14 for Look To The Stars, the winner of which earns exemption from the $3.5 million Golden Slipper ballot.
“The fence was off the other day in the Lonhro so she had excuses there,” Conners said via Racenet.
“I put the crossover nose band on and was confident after they’d gone 100-metres that she could win today.
“Having Blake (Shinn) on helped too, he’s got good hands and you need that with this filly.
“I’ll probably back her up in the Magic Night the Saturday before the Slipper and see what happens.”
Conners has four Golden Slipper titles to his name, winning the world’s richest juvenile race first up in 1991 with Tierce followed by Burst in 1992 and Prowl in 1998. The trainer last won the race in 2000 with Belle Du Jour.
Going from a midweek restricted race win to the 2015 Golden Slipper is definitely an ambitious task but jockey Blake Shinn is confident that if any horse can do it, it’s Look To The Stars.
“She was four lengths off them but what I liked is that she wanted to chase. She is a filly going places. That was a courageous win and she will appreciate a little further,” Shinn said.
