2015 Reisling Stakes Field – Perignon in Barrier 1

Nine two-year-old fillies will get their final test ahead of the 2015 Golden Slipper at Randwick this Saturday in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m).

Just one of the ten nominated fillies failed to accept for the race on Wednesday morning – John O’Shea’s Antelucan. The trainer will still saddle two juveniles from Godolphin in the race however with both Calaverite and Ottoman featuring in the 2015 Reisling Stakes final field.

Calaverite won the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) on debut back in October but was less than impressive on resuming in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) on February 14. The filly was down on her nose as the gates opened and went back. She was six lengths away and wide but made a late challenge down the outside, finishing just on the heels of the placegetters in sixth.

The filly will enjoy a jump from barrier two with Sam Clipperton to ride while Godolphin’s number one juvenile filly Ottoman will jump from barrier seven with James McDonald.

Ottoman roared home and scored in a great debut at Rosehill on December 20 but died on her run in the last 100 metres of the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) on February 21.

Of the nine runners, Ottoman is the highest-rated in the Golden Slipper futures betting at Ladbrokes.com.au. The filly is on the fourth line of betting at $15.

Gerald Ryan’s Perignon will enjoy the inside jump from barrier one with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle. The filly won her maiden in a Tab Rewards Plate (1200m) at Canterbury on December 27, which earned her a shot at the $2 million Magic Millions Classic (1200m) on January 10. The filly finished a strong fifth, less than two lengths off winner Le Chef.

Ryan will also saddle Fireworks in the 2015 Reisling Stakes, who is getting her first start since winning the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) on Janaury 31. Fireworks is still without a Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) nomination so will need to impress on Saturday for her connections to consider paying the $150,000 late entry fee. The filly will jump from barrier six with Brenton Avdulla.

Gai Waterhouse’s Giulietta won her maiden on debut at the beginning of January but finished outside the placings in both the Widden Stakes and Lonhro Plate. The filly will jump from barrier five with Tim Clark to ride while Waterhouse’s other runner English will jump from barrier three with Blake Shinn.
