2015 Randwick Guineas Field Down to Seven: Kermadec Out

After being dually accepted across two states in both the Guineas races for this Saturday, the Chris Waller-trained Kermadec has officially been scratched from Sydney’s Randwick Guineas 2015 field.

The progressive Teofilo colt runs instead in Melbourne’s $500,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington where he will jump the favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au.

While the Australian Guineas field is at capacity with 16 starters and one emergency, only seven three-year-olds remain in the mix for the $600,000 Group 1 Girvan Waugh Randwick Guineas (1600m) at Royal Randwick this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Waller is not without a runner despite the withdrawal of Kermadec however with the stable represented by Victorian Derby winner Preferment.

The Zabeel colt has drawn the second outside gate and is looking to improve on a disappointing first-up 11th, of 13 runners, behind Hallowed Crown in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on February 21.

It is a diminutive field he faces in the Randwic Guineas but definitely not without depth or class with Hallowed Crown leading the way.

Bart & James Cummings’ Street Sense colt has come up trumps with barrier one, regular rider Hugh Bowman staying on the ultra-consistent young gun.

Winner of the coveted Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill last September, Hallowed Crown was last seen winning Hobartville Stakes first-up – a race Kermadec ran third in.

Now he backs up in the Group 1 shooting for his third win second-up from as many attempts two runs in.

Drawn one on his outside in barrier two is Hallowed Crown’s major danger, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Shooting To Win to be ridden by Blake Shinn.

Shinn was aboard the Northern Meteor colt first-up when Shooting To Win ran fourth, beaten under half a lengths, to Hallowed Crown in the Hobartville at Rosehill.

He was also beaten by the Cummings’ horse in the Golden Rose finishing third before going on to win the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) in Sydney and then the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne last October.

Shooting To Win then could be hard to hold out again in another Guineas this weekend with previous winning form at this level over the distance.

The stable is also going great guns with Team Snowden taking out the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield last Saturday with Pride Of Dubai.

The other two major Randwick Guineas hopes this season are then the Paul Messara-trained Scissor Kick in barrier three and Sweynesse in the outside gate.

Redoute’s Choice colt Scissor Kick was runner-up in the Golden Rose and Stan Fox Stakes behind Hallowed Crown and Shooting To Win respectively in the spring before his ninth to Brazen Beau in Flemington’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).

He atoned for the Coolmore loss first-up this prep when on February 7 at Rosehill he won the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) before a fifth when crossing one and three-quarters of a length away in the Hobartville.

Sweynesse meanwhile runs second-up on Saturday after a Hobartville Stakes second from the horse who returns to Randwick for the first time since a brave third to Hampton Court in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at the track last October.

Rounding out the Randwick Guineas field are then last start Kembla Grange winner Rhodin Drive and Hobartville eighth placed Keeper gelding Sworn To Silence.
