There’s no stopping Darren Weir’s five-year-old gelding Taiyoo, who is set to back-up in the $400,000 race after winning the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) on Saturday.

Taiyoo began well and enjoyed a good trip in fourth place before moving up outside the leader (Waltzing To Win) at the 1200m mark. He went to the front on straightening and after quite a long battle got the upper hand and drew clear to win by half a length.

The Lord Reims Stakes was the fifth consecutive win for the gelding, which includes the Listed Torney Cup Night (2500m), and the twelfth campaign start for the five-year-old, that dates back to October.

Taiyoo will shoulder the lone top weight of 59kg in the 2015 Adelaide Cup and will have to overcome a wide start from barrier 14 with jockey Brad Rawiller.

Tony McEvoy’s Pelicano has also drawn a wide start; the six-year-old gelding will have to overcome a start from the outside gate (15) with Damien Oliver to ride.

Pelicano won the Listed Weribee Cup (2600m) in December 2013 but was sidelined for the next 11 months due to an injury in his off-fore sesamoid. He had a lovely trial win on December 1, reeling up to the leaders late and running through the line superbly but he was unable to reenact this form in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) two weeks later, which was his first race start since returning from injury.

The six-year-old gelding has failed to place in any of his five starts this campaign, which includes two runs in Tasmania during February.

British raider Renew travelled to Australia during the spring with plans to contest the Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m), however these were quickly shelved when the gelding finished end of the field in both the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) and Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).

Connections decided to keep Renew in Australia and he was transferred to the care of Archie Alexander, after which he won the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) on November 15.

Renew has failed to make much of his two starts this campaign but will relish the return to two mile as he jumps from barrier two with Chris Symons to ride.

There are a number of 2015 Adelaide Cup runners backing up from the Lord Reims Stakes like Taiyoo, including runner-ups Lucky Lucky Lucky and Gossip Guru.

Lucky Lucky Lucky is the second runner for McEvoy, set to jump from barrier 12 with champion hoop Kerrin McEvoy. The gelding has finished in the first three in all four of his past starts, including winning the Rain Lover Plate (1950m) on January 31.

The Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained Gossip Guru will be the next gate in from Lucky Lucky Lucky with Ronnie Stewart to ride. The training duo will also saddle Too Cool To Fool, who will jump from barrier four with Clare Lindop. The four-year-old brown mare just missed out on a placing to her stable mate in the Lord Reims on Saturday.
