Tycoon Tara Wins 2015 Mannerism Stakes and Coolmore Classic Aim

Warrnambool trainer Symon Wilde is aiming high this autumn with his flying mare Tycoon Tara who could now head to Sydney for the 2015 Coolmore Classic after stamping herself as a top type with her Mannerism Stakes win in Melbourne today.

The Written Tycoon four-year-old took her record up to five wins at just her 10th start saluting in back-to-back Group races after her Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) victory at Caulfield on February 14.

She returned to the track on Blue Diamond Stakes Day this afternoon to prove her last start was no fluke, this time accounting for a similar line-up of mares in the $150,000 Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) – known as the Premier Signs Stakes.

Nothing went the favourite’s way in the race with Tycoon Tara looking awkward getting posted four or five wide with absolutely no cover after Mark Zahra took the fast-out-the-gates Choose up front for a strolling pace.

There was no pace on at all and so Tycoon Tara’s hoop Ben Melham waited until they had gone up the hill before going right around them on the outside to lead and make the race his own.

“I was just a bit concerned working up the hill,” Melham said.

“She met those not that well in the weights today after her last win.

“I was happy to be wide, we weren’t going fast so I just paced myself up the hill and then was happy to go to the top.”

He had the right mare underneath him to handle the muddling speed and change of tactics, Tycoon Tara ($3) responding well to kick away early at the top of the straight.

With a host of rivals unable to get a run, Tycoon Tara displayed a nice turn of foot to win running away from Starcraft four-year-old Choose ($9), coming off back-to-back Flemington wins over the distance, with the Darren Weir-trained Street Allure ($26) adding value to the trifecta in third.

It was another fantastic run from a fantastic mare who did a terrific job at her first look at the 1400m with more to come from the untapped Mannerism Stakes winner.

“She’s an underrated mare this, she’s very good,” Melham said.

“Symon’s done a terrific job…she should be nearly unbeaten this horse.

“Every time they raise the bar she steps up to the occasion and I think she’s going to keep improving too.”

Wilde was thrilled the mare stamped herself as a classy type with the Premier Signs Stakes win and said he would consider a trip north for the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival targeting the $600,000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 14.

“The progression of this horse in one preparation is astonishing really,” Wilde said.

“We always knew she had good talent but today she stamped herself as a good mare.

“To still win with not everything going her way, a good sign.

“She’s got a really bright future. I really liked the way she stamped herself today.

“I didn’t know if the other day was a fluke or not.

“Everyone can see she’s a good horse now.

“A mare in form, you’ve got to keep going I think.

“We might consider Sydney. I’ll have to have a chat to the owners and Ben…but maybe the 1500 metres in Sydney.

“We should aim high and have a crack, why not.”
