Taiyoo Continues Winning Streak in 2015 Lord Reims Stakes

A small field of just nine potential stayers tackled the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) at Morphettville this afternoon with Darren Weir’s Taiyoo continuing his dominant campaign performance.

The five-year-old gelding was the $1.45 odds-on favourite in the betting at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Taiyoo was two lengths off roughie Waltzing To Win round the home turn while Lucky Lucky Lucky came into the field at just the right time. Coming up the outside, jockey Jye McNeil asked the favourite to go and he managed to draw up to the leader. Lucky Lucky Lucky joined the front and quickly took the lead but Taiyoo came up the inside for a gutsy win.

He won half a length in front of Tony McEvoy’s Lucky Lucky Lucky ($5) with the Leon MacDonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained Gossip Guru ($61) a further two lengths away in third, leading the rest of the runners.

It was another win for Taiyoo who just keeps on keeping on. The five-year-old gelding has had 12 starts this campaign, dating back to a Benchmark 90 in October, seven of which he’s won.

The Darren Weir-trained gelding has now won his five past starts in a row, which includes two Benchmark 96 races over 2400 metres and the Listed Torney Night Cup (2500m) last time out at Moonee Valley just eight days ago. Taiyoo was quickly away in the race before easing to get a good trip in fourth place, one out and one back. He put in a good run approaching the home turn, taking the lead at the 100m mark, and went on to win very well by three-quarters of a length.

There’s no rest in sight for Taiyoo after winning the 2015 Lord Reims Stakes. The gelding will remain in South Australia to contest the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) on Monday the ninth of April. He is one of 21 stayers nominated for the race, including the likes of Renew and Akzar, who just finished third in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield this afternoon.

Another grand staying performance by Taiyoo takes his total tally up to 13 wins from 26 career starts.
