Suavito Scores Upset 2015 Futurity Stakes Result: Dissident Runs Third

Nigel Blackiston’s progressive mare Suavito scored a massive boilover in the opening Group 1 of Blue Diamond Stakes Day winning the Futurity Stakes 2015 over Smokin’ Joey and beaten odds-on favourite Dissident.

The four-year-old daughter of Thorn Park was first-up here continuing her nice run when resuming and her nice form at Caulfield Racecourse where she has now won three of her five starts over the 1400m at the track.

All the money and all the hype for this autumn’s $400,000 Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) was on Peter Moody’s odds-on favourite Dissident who won the CF Orr Stakes over the 1400m here last time out.

He travelled well in a race with no pace batting the Gai Waterhouse-trained Group 1 winning mare Driefontein, fastest out of the gates from the inside alley, for the lead.

Driefontein made the favourite work for the lead, but Dissident got off the rail to get in front.

The two altered between running first and second during the race however with the mare booting up to lead again on the fence, while upset 2014 The Goodwood winner Smokin’ Joey moved up to third with just over 500m left to go out wide.

Suavito and jockey Damien Oliver, fresh off the Autumn Classic win the race before aboard the now Group 1-bound Alpine Eagle, began their sweeping run around the outside.

On the straight the Wez Hunter-trained Smokin’ Joey, coming off a Group 3 Carlyon Cup win over the mile here a fortnight ago, served it up to Dissident.

But it was Suavito ($11) who took the lead with 50m left to travel, the mare too strong for the boys in the end.

She had a length to spare over Smokin’ Joey ($17) on the line while Dissident ($1.45) finished a neck away third leaving everyone asking what happened to the hot favourite?

“She has a great record here first-up,” Oliver said after the win.

“She’s just so tough. There’s not a lot of her but geez she’s all heart.

“Smokin’ Joey put the pressure on them coming into the turn…and we got on his back with a nice drag into the race.

“The connections wanted a crack at a Group 1.

“She’s going great guns.”

It was a huge Futurity Stakes result for Blackiston and connections who have now won a Group 1 with an untapped mare who won both the Group 3 Tesio Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day and the Group 2 Momentum Energy Stakes (2000m) at Flemington during the spring.

“I knew the mare would be going really well this time in after two nice trials at Flemington,” Blackiston said.

“It was the perfect race to try her at weight-for-age.

“We decided three or four months ago in the spring we’d come back and have a go at either the (Group 3) Mannerism (Stakes) or the Futurity if it was a small field.

“It worked out perfect.

“She won a Group 2 and a Group 3 in the spring but to come back and win a Group 1 first-up, terrific.

“She’s a valuable mare now.”
