One of three Group 1s on the Caulfield race card today, this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) originally attracted a capacity line-up of 18 sprinters.

The first to come out of the line-up was the Peter Moody-trained Flamberge who had an outside barrier 17 draw, the Rubiton Stakes runner-up scratched on Friday after connections discovered mucus on the gelding’s throat earlier in the week.

Peter Morgan & Craig Widdison’s young filly Eloping was also officially scratched and instead raced under the lights at Moonee Valley last night in the $150,000 Group 3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m) where she could only manage to finish three and a half lengths away seventh to upset $101 winner Written Dash.

That leaves 16 smart types to face off in the Oakleigh Plate today, the latest markets at Ladbrokes.com.au still led by the easing favourite Earthquake.

Winner of the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on this day as a two-year-old last Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival, the now John O’Shea-trained daughter of Exceed And Excel opened at $5 in Oakleigh Plate betting.

Running first-up here at a track she is undefeated at with three previous Caulfield wins, young Earthquake drifted out as far as $7 but is back into $6 to win her second Group 1 here.

She shares top spot in the markets however with co-favourite Vain Queen in barrier 10, one inside of Earthquake and jockey Chad Schofield in gate 11.

The John Sadler-trained Artie Schiller mare Vain Queen has been steady in the Oakleigh Plate markets all week for her first-up run, the five-year-old last seen winning the Group 3 G.H. Mumm Stakes (1100m) at Flemington on Crown Oaks Day last November to bring her record over Saturday’s distance to three from five.

Third favourite in from $8.50 to $7.50 is Atmospherical for jockey Craig Williams in barrier four on just 52.5kg.

David Pfieffer’s Northern Meteor mare won back-to-back races over 1100m in Sydney and 1000m at Flemington respectively at the end of her spring campaign before a nice first-up run last time out.

A winner of four of her five runs over 1100m, which she sees in today’s Oakleigh Plate, Atmospherical ran third to the star Hawkes-trained Chautauqua in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) on February 14 and is now after her third win from four second-up starts.

The continued market mover in from as long as $17 at the start of the week right into $8.50 is then Moody’s remaining hopeful A Time For Julia.

Redoute’s Choice mare A Time For Julia has never won over the 1100m but has a solid Caulfield record of two wins and four seconds from eight starts.

She was runner-up over 1200m at the track twice in her early spring campaign in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes and the Group 3 How Now Stakes before failing to fire when 12th to Trust In A Gust in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m).

On Derby Day she was very disappointing when beaten over 12 lengths by Deep Field running eighth in a Group 2 down the straight when caught on the wrong part of the track and failing to come on that she is tipped to improve on when resuming here.

She is yet to finish out of the money when resuming with two wins and two seconds from four first-up assignments to date.

Robert Smerdon’s last start stakes winner at Sandown Shamal Wind and Adelaide visitor Iconic in drawn at opposite ends of the Oakleigh Plate field in barriers 15 and one respectively are the next best in betting at $10 as is Lord Of The Sky.

Robbie Laing’s Danerich entire Lord Of The Sky is firming in the markets in from $15 with dual Oakleigh Plate winning jockey Stephen Baster in the saddle on just 53kg, a notable drop back from 59kg last time out when seventh in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m) at Flemington last month.

The trio on $10 is then followed by the Team Hawkes-trained Medaglia D’Oro colt Nostradamus ($11 in from $13) first-up after running 13th to Brazen Beau in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) back in November.
