It’ll be a warm day for the 100 predicted runners at Warwick Farm today with a maximum temperature of 31 degrees and 49 percent humidity at 3:00pm, however the partly cloudy skies and 16 km/h winds are set to cool them down a little.

Warwick Farm Track Report – 28/02/2015

  • Rail Position: True
  • Track Condition: Soft (5)
  • Weather: Fine
  • Penetrometer: 11

The racing at Warwick Farm kicks off at 1:05pm this afternoon with the Schweppes Handicap (2400m) and will continue through until 5:35pm with the Cal Rei Handicap (1200m) closing the program.

Nestled between the two Benchmarks are five black-type races, including the $500,000 Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m), which is the day’s feature race, due to jump as race 6 at 4:15pm.

15 high-class gallopers will tackle the mile trip including firm favourite Contributer. The John O’Shea-trained five-year-old is the $2.70 in the Chipping Norton Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au with his price firming from $3.

Contributer will enjoy a jump from barrier four, which is considered the most successful starting gate in the race’s history, with James McDonald serving as jockey. The horse enjoyed a strong first-up win in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) two weeks ago, which is the ideal lead-up race. Even Chris Waller, who will saddle eight runners in the race, admits the Chipping Norton Stakes is Contributer’s race to lose.

The other anticipated race in the line-up is the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m), which will be run by 12 classy three-year-old fillies. First Seal has firmed to $1.75 odds-on favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au after opening at odds of $2.30.

There has so far been a total of five scratchings across the day’s races, see below for the full details.
