Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The opening Blue Diamond Stakes Day race at Caulfield this weekend is the Zeditave Stakes 2015, betting tips for the meeting’s first event detailed below.
Nine three-year-old colts and geldings make up the field for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Zeditave Stakes (1200m), the set weights plus penalties spring due to jump at 1:30pm (AEDT).
The country’s leading online bookmaker Ladbrokes.com.au look to be having a hard time separating the chances of the up-and-comers in the Zeditave Stakes betting markets with five under double figures.
Narrow $4.20 favourite is Armada in barrier six for jockey Damien Oliver.
Peter Moody prepares the Fastnet Rock colt who has had just the one win from seven starts.
He has form in top company though having finished fourth to Brazen Beau in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on November 1.
He has had four starts at Caulfield for just the one third place finish though so the track might not be his preferred.
The next best fancied in the Zeditave Stakes odds are then Group 3 winning War Pass colt Galaxy Pegasus ($4.50), market mover Onerous ($5) for Team Hawkes and the Wendy Kelly-trained Fast Cash ($5.50).
So will the first four in betting run the first four on Saturday, or can WA raider Rommel ($9) or the lightly raced Setinum ($12) get the job done in an upset Zeditave Stakes result?
#1 Rommel ($9)
Perth raider from the Ascot stables of Neville Parnahm, Parnham’s apprentice son Chris Parnham in the saddle here with options from barrier four. Parnham has been riding in Melbourne well and so has the experience to deftly guide a horse from his home state around the Caulfield track. Perth form doesn’t always stack up in Melbourne during carnival season but this Group 2 WA Guineas winner gets a chance. Yet to win over the distance but in a pretty open field is definitely not a write off by any means and could salute at good odds.
#3 Galaxy Pegasus ($4.50)
Backmarker Galaxy Pegasus has Craig Williams aboard with the colt shooting for his fourth win at start number six. Won the Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes over this distance at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day but failed at Flemington down the straight when 15th of 16 runners in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes. Goes well fresh, has first look at Caulfield and thing will be better with the bend in the course and will be gunning home in the finish to run a few down.
#7 Onerous ($5)
Happy to follow the money trail on this one who has a nice barrier two for jockey Dwayne Dunn, a hoop that knows how to perform under pressure on Blue Diamond Stakes Day. Dash For Cash grey won at Seymour two back first-up before a fifth behind a smart type in Profit Share over 1300m at Sandown at the start of the month. Back down to 1200m so if that’s not too sharp will be flying home.
