12 top-class three-year-old fillies will contest the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm this Saturday, giving punters a variety of betting options.
Just five of the 12 runners are offering single figure odds in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, led by John Thompson’s First Seal.
The filly opened the betting at odds of $2.30 but after plenty of support from punters her price has continually shortened to $2.05, making her the market mover as well as the favourite.
First Seal is one of seven runners coming via the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) two weeks ago. The filly did well to finish second to Gai Waterhouse’s Adrift in the race, where many classy fillies failed first-up. She will enjoy the step up in distance this Saturday but is it enough to justify her staunch support in the betting?

#2 First Seal ($2.05)
John Thompson’s three-year-old filly was the only one not embarrassed by upset victor Adrift in the Light Fingers Stakes on February 14. First Seal was forced to push up off the inside before drifting back to midfield to try and get to the outside. She shoved into the clear up the rise and hit the line powerfully. The filly has finished in the first two in six of her seven career starts, which includes winning the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) by an impressive three lengths in the spring. The filly is a proven winner over 1400 metres after winning the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes and will enjoy the increase in distance this Saturday.
#8 Wine Tales ($16)
One of three fillies running for Chris Waller in the Surround Stakes, Wine Tales is a lucrative betting prospect for punters with a win price of $16 or $4.10 to place. The filly will enjoy the inside jump from barrier one with Jim Cassidy to ride. Wine Tales is one of three fillies resuming on Saturday, she was last seen running second in the Listed Twilight Glow Stakes (1400m) on November 15. The filly has finished in the first two in five of her six career starts and won her one start at Warwick Farm.
#7 Adrift ($6)
Gai Waterhouse’s three-year-old filly was an upset winner of the Light Fingers Stakes, heading into the race with a starting price of $41. The filly coursed three wide but only just off the speed. She got up to the one by one by 500m before going four wide up the rise. She kept coming on the line and stayed on strongly to win by three-quarters of a length. The filly will return to Warwick Farm where she won a Benchmark 62 back in November. Adrift will jump midfield from barrier six with Tye Angland to ride.
