Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
One of the three Group 1 features on the Caulfield program this weekend is the Oakleigh Plate 2015 for the sprinters, betting tips for the short-distance showdown found below.
Due to jump at 5:15pm (AEDT) as Caulfield Race 7 on Saturday, this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) is down to 17 runners with Peter Moody pulling the pink on Flamberge this morning.
Heading the Oakleigh Plate betting odds through Ladbrokes.com.au at $5 is the John O’Shea-trained Earthquake, the Exceed And Excel filly having won the Blue Diamond Stakes on this day last autumn for her previous trainer Peter Snowden.
She jumps from barrier 11 this weekend in the Oakleigh Plate field taking on an open-age line-up first-up out to improve on her Coolmore Stud Stakes eighth at the end of the spring.
Also on single figures in the Oakleigh Plate odds are John Sadler’s resuming mare Vain Queen ($5.50), Rubiton Stakes third placed Atmospherical ($8), the ultra-consistent WJ Adams Stakes winner last time out Shamal Wind ($9) and market mover A Time For Julia ($9.50).
So are one of these top Oakleigh Plate fancies the ones to get behind, or is there value to be found further down the markets from the likes of Fast ‘n’ Rocking ($18) or smart young colt Nostradamus ($13)?
#16 Earthquake ($5)
Lots to like about the race favourite who won the Blue Diamond on this day last year as a 2YO. Had a spring last campaign of mixed results but she’s back at her pet Caulfield track where has won all three of her previous starts. With the right run she should settle just better than midfield and if she finds cover will be flying home. Two winning trials leading into this at Cranbourne over 800m, so 1100m first-up looks ideal. Is a previous winner at the track and distance, and first-up record is also hard to knock (3-2-0-1).
#10 Atmospherical ($8)
Last year’s Oakleigh Plate winner Lankan Rupee came off a win in the Rubiton Stakes and this year David Pfieffer’s Northern Meteor mare Atmospherical is the best of the Rubiton runners backing up in this Group 1. She ran third behind Chautauqua and has a gun second-up record (3-2-0-1) she is looking to add to here. Distance is the key to her success as she’s won four from five over 1100m. 82% Place Rate is outstanding and will get the ideal run from barrier four so could be very hard to hold off on the line if the speed is on.
#7 Lord Of The Sky ($15)
Adding a bit of value to this year’s Oakleigh Plate trifecta we like the Robbie Laing-trained Danerich stallion Lord Of The Sky after his sixth win from eight starts at Caulfield. Has been in good form over the summer but hasn’t won for a while. Lankan Rupee won from barrier seven last year which this horse has, and jockey Stephen Baster is the only dual Oakleigh Plate winning hoop with a ride this year.
