The major race in Melbourne running this weekend is the Blue Diamond Stakes 2015 for the two-year-olds, betting tips on the Caulfield feature found below.
Fifteen promising juveniles are engaged to face off in Caulfield Race 8 on Saturday, the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) due to jump at 5:50pm (AEDT).
Eight fillies take on the boys this year looking to continue the dominance of their sex after Earthquake made it three straight wins for the girls last Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.
One of those is also the firm Blue Diamond Stakes betting favourite with the Robert Smerdon-trained Fontiton ($2.30) drawn a treat in barrier one.
Miracles Of Life (2013) won from the inside alley two years ago and Fontiton goes into the race undefeated, the daughter of Turffontein after the BD Prelude – Stakes double achieved by Earthquake 12 months ago.
Following Fontiton in the Blue Diamond Stakes odds are then the likes of the colts and geldings’ Prelude runner-up Pride Of Dubai ($6) for last year’s winning trainer Peter Snowden who is now in partnership with his son Paul, Lake Geneva ($11) to be ridden by four-time Blue Diamond Stakes winning hoop Dwayne Dunn and third in the boys’ Prelude last time out Sampeah ($12) for jockey Chad Schofield.
So should you follow the order of the odds when placing your Blue Diamond Stakes bets, or is there value to be found further down the markets form a longer priced hopeful such as the BD C&G Prelude winner Of The Brave ($13)?
#8 Fontiton ($2.30)
Really is hard to go past the favourite here with so much working in her favour. She is undefeated with three smart wins starting with her six length win on debut in the Inglis Banner. Won the Fillies Prelude last time out a fortnight ago as Earthquake did leading up to her Blue Diamond win 12 months ago. Gets the run of the race from the inside alley with Mark Zahra retaining the ride, the barrier producing 2013 winner Miracles Of Life. She’s a speedy filly but also isn’t one-paced so can beat a big field to become the fourth straight filly to win and fifth favourite to salute for the punters.
#7 Pride Of Dubai ($6)
Sticking with the bookies for the Blue Diamond Stakes quinella, Pride Of Dubai on the improve and out to reward his connections for forking out the $55,000 late entry. At that cost they obviously believe in his ability, and ability is something he looks to have bucket loads. Great barrier five draw for jockey Damian Browne who stays on after the duo went down a nose in the BD C&G Prelude two weeks ago.
#2 Of The Brave ($13)
So many genuine place chances but sticking with the Mark Riley-trained BD Prelude winner Of The Brave, Stephen Baster retaining the ride on the Starspangledbanner colt having ridden him to victory in both his starts to date. Only held on by a nose in the Prelude and how he handles the step up in distance again to 1200m will be key but he is undefeated and did it from 10 (of 14) last time so barrier nine this weekend is about right. The past four Blue Diamond Stakes winners were all undefeated going into the race and this colt is the only other runner outside the favourite yet to taste defeat, and both his wins have been at Caulfield so the track suits.
