Two exciting two-year-olds are currently battling for top spot in the markets for Saturday’s opening Blue Diamond Stakes Day showdown at Caulfield with Galaxy Pegasus and Armada the two to beat in the Zeditave Stakes 2015.
The juveniles-only race for colts and geldings kicks off the Melbourne action at 1:30pm (AEDT), nine youngsters engaged for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Zeditave Stakes (1200m).
It is a very open Zeditave Stakes betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au this year too with five of the field at single figures to win.
Narrow favourite at $4.20 is the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained War Pass colt Galaxy Pegasus.
A winner of three of his five starts to date the progressive galloper returns to racing here having last been seen backing up from a Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes (1200m) victory at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day to run a disappointing 15th in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Derby Day.
Hot on Galaxy Pegasus’s heels in the Zeditave Stakes odds paying $4.40 is Peter Moody-trained Armada for jockey Damien Oliver in barrier six.
The Fastnet Rock colt is first-up here having run fourth in his two most recent runs during the spring when five lengths off Brazen Beau in the Coolmore Stud Stakes and then two lengths off Lord Aspen in the Listed Hilton Hotel Stakes (1400m) the following Saturday on November 8.
The next two best in betting are then Fast Cash ($5) and Onerous ($5.50) drawn in barriers eight and two respectively.
Wendy Kelly saddles up Cranbourne-based Charge Forward gelding Fast Cash who won at Moonee Valley over 1200m at the start of last month before a seventh to Java in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1300m) at Sandown on Australia Day.
Onerous with the nice barrier meanwhile represents Team Hawkes, the Dash For Cash grey coming off a fifth to Profit Share over 1300m at Sandown from the same barrier (2) with the same hoop (Dwayne Dunn) from February 7.
Rounding out the single figure fancies in the race at a firming $8.50, in from $10, is then Perth raider Rommel.
Fellow WA visitor Chris Parnham has the ride on his father Neville Parnham’s Commands colt from barrier four this weekend.
Winner of the Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) at Ascot in November, Rommel is yet to race outside of Perth and is second-up for the season after a first-up third in the Perth Magic Millions 3YO Stakes.
The other horse of note at slightly more generous odds of $13 for an upset in the opener on Saturday is then the lightly-raced Setinum in barrier three for jockey Chad Schofield.
Shane Fliedner’s Bendigo-based gelding won his last start at Seymour in October on the back of a third at his home track on debut and comes off a nice trial win at Cranbourne from the start of the month.
